  2. From the “For what it’s worth” department:

    Re: Your flag.

Way back in the very early 70’s, I was involved with a Cdn. military band. We had played in a town in the US for a long weekend. The last day, a few of us who had been frequenting a VFW, were presented with American flags. These were not just screen printed, but large, sewn bunting flags with a metal pole, mounting bracket and a gold eagle for the top of the pole.

When 9/11 happened, I dug out the flag the day after, and mounted it high on the 2 story house we had (in a larger city than I’m in now) - much to the chagrin of my neighbours (except the Brits next door!!), passersby and other assorted cretins. It was to show a sign of respect and solidarity with the US. Some tried to get me to take it down and some tried to remove it.

Then a funny thing happened; US flags began popping up all over the place to the point that the 2 flag shops were sold out and couldn’t get any more. Other Canadians had the same idea. The local media suddenly switched horses mid stream by saying “what a glorious thing was happening”.

I also noted that on 9/11, I saw several (US) news programs where the anchor made a comment to the effect that ‘someone must have been in a hurry and had hoisted the US flag with the union down’. In the “Flag Etiquette” book I got with mine, it clearly states that the flag may be flown upside down during ‘dire distress’. This probably explains why there were also some photos of Pearl Harbour, Hawaii on Dec. 7th, 1941, with the flags at half mast and with the union down.

    Now you know.

  4. Good for this guy! And double good that the Florida courts did something right!

“The underlying dispute over the flagpole is still in trial court but Andres, 68, has been flying his flag for the last three years under a temporary injunction.

And he’s got a bigger flagpole now than when he began --- 20 feet instead of 13. ``My flag still flies and it will never come down,’’ Andres said”.
    OH YEAH! Go Man Go!

  5. Good! Now news like this is good to hear, I love happy endings and this IS one for sure. But it sure makes me angry to have anyone told not to fly the American Flag. And with all that the Flag means , well it says it all. The home of the Brave because of our Brave Veterans and our troops today.
