  1. Oh I’m certain she will. Universal health care is a basic human right you know.

  2. I am tempted to see this as the pot calling the kettle black for some reason.

But, on second thought, perhaps it is merely the Grand Canyon calling the Marianas Trench a giant, gaping hole.

While the charge is not without merit, the accuser looks hypocritical.

  3. They forgot one item...this.

  4. Or the space hippies they stole the gesture from:

  5. First: Macker, that was disgusting.

Second: TimO, when have hippies ever been original? I agree that they stole this particular gesture from Gene Roddenberry, but consider: did hippies not also steal the ‘peace’ sign from Winston Churchill? V for Victory became a ‘V’ for ‘peace’.

    Here we go again…

Nobody knows where or for what purpose the “V for Victory” sign was “invented”. However, the whole “Agincourt-French-lopping-off-fingers” thing likely did not happen (the French would have been more likely to simply kill them), though another possible origin comes from the Genoese Crossbowmen and their victories over Austria/the Holy Roman Empire during the smack-ups between the Pope and the HRE in the Renaissance.

However, the “V for Peace” sign also has a pretty long lineage, and by all accounts was around in the 1700’s at some point, as it was being used by some die-hard “Turn the other Cheek” Christian sects in and around there.

In other words, Winston appropriated the “V” sign from at least two hundred years of use by various groups, so somebody else using it would hardly be outside of the pale.

  7. And Macker, I concur with Christopher (for ONCE).

    That was uncalled for.

  8. Sorry guys, I’m that pissed off at that bastard who’s about to take office.

  9. Fair enough Macker, fair enough.

  10. RE. The ‘V’ sign.

No matter the origin, the first public figure I can recall in my many yrs. that used that sign was Churchill.  I don’t recall ever seeing anyone before him waving a two fingered ‘V’
    for the press.

Now everyone uses it to a point I can’t stand seeing it. They use it in the most inappropriate places but usually when they can not think of anything else that may be original. Up goes the ‘V.’ Even when there isn’t any reason to.

And I’m old enough to remember seeing newspapers in ‘44 and ‘45. And newsreels as well.  Loved the newsreels and home town once had a movie house that showed nothing but.
