Darn but that is BEAUTIFUL. If I ever make it home again, I’d like to see that place again.
Went on a visit must have been 40 yrs ago or more. The one plane I would LOVE to see personally is the Spruce Goose. I’ve seen photos and videos of course, but never up close.
Ask and you shall recieve Peiper my man.Heres a link to the evergreen air museum just 40 minutes away from me in McMinville Oregon

Not quite “next to the National Mall” - it’s actually next door to Dulles airport, about 25 miles west of the Mall. In addition to all the aircraft and spacecraft it has what outwardly looks like an airport control tower. The tower is a multi-level exhibit overlooking Dulles airport, with live radar and an inbound flight radio receiver.
In photos #22, #81, and #86 at the given link the B-29 is the actual, reconstructed Enola Gay.
There is also another hanger not pictured at the link for space vehicles - it’s visible in #63 behind the SR-71 Blackbird; you can see the front of the Shuttle Enterprise in that photo.
One day is not enough to appreciate all the exhibits.
If you want to get ‘touchy feely’ close, you need to go out to the Pima Air Museum in Tuscon, Arizona. Went there a couple of years ago and wished that I’d had more than one day to look around (you NEED it...)
Been to the Udvar-Hazy a couple of times. Its a shame they dont have Metrorail service out to Dulles, as moving around D.C. for half the day is problematic.
As an R/C modeler it is an orgasmic experience. Pay special attention to the small displays they have throughout the museum.... Amelia Earhart and Lindberg’s uniforms and personal effects, and if you look over on the side near the Shuttle Enterprise, they have a case with the original model mothership from Close Encounters. No big signs that say LOOK AT THIS DUMMIES, you have to read the little cards to get floored by the history there....
Another good one is the National Naval Aviation Museum It isn’t a multi-day extravaganza, however, if you happen to be in the area, it’s an excellent way to kill a day or 2. Combine this with a historical Civil War fort on the beaches (sugar white sand by the way) with coastal defense bunkers from WWII and a few other Civil War era forts in excellent repair on the base itself, you could turn it into a weeks vacation easily.
Sorry, I’ll be good.

Oh, and did I mentio0n, if you are lucky, you may be able to watch a practice bt the Blue Angels?
Now, I’ll be quiet…

I want that P-38 in the background, although I would also be happy with the red, white & blue Mustang in the foreground.
Yes to that P-38.
Rich. thanks.
I also saw at your link ,, the Ford Tri-Motor. Not the best photo BUT I have to share this with you all.
An actual Ford Tri landed at our Naval Air station for an exhibit and man oh man WHAT A THRILL !!!!!! Major - big time for me as I’d heard of it but never seen one.
This was back in the 60’s and I was stationed at Patuxent Naval Air. Anyway.. I got to go onboard that plane & people I fell in love and wished I could go up in her. What a beauty inside when decor really meant something.
Thank you for that link and the reminder. Man what a plane that was.
