Go foreign - Besides Rush who are a CLASSIC of greatness still putting out new - look at Apocalyptica (Finnish, cello with a hard rock turn - their rendition of Nothing Else Matters is awesome). I saw them in concert in Louisville - great show. Both the adult ‘kids’ aren’t available - or I’d be able to give you some more. The foreign groups understand what artistry and music is about - the American are too much based in whatever the ‘record label’ wants to promote.
My son listens to Black Metal (Death metal) - some of them (an English group - Cradle of Filth) have the most beautiful and complex music (which is why we all love Rush)(forget the lyrics, but it is about a historical killer) going - come to find out their musical ‘inspirations’ are Beethoven and Bach. Imagine an American rocker admitting that. And they are all married with children and polite as heck - a friends daughter worked with them in Houston and sent my son pics w/autographs - said they were a million times nicer than Type 0 Negative whom they were opening for.
Well, wardmama, we agree to disagree? Rush was never a favorite. Nor was U2. Both have a song or two that I like, but I didn’t like them enough to buy the album/CD. You will look in vain for either Rush or U2 on my iTunes playlist.
I guess we can - never knew Rush until I married my hubby - he played every new Rush album/cd until all of us in the house knew all the lyrics. Now with the dvds - we actually get to see them through the years. His sisters bought us tickets for Rush when they were here locally for our anniversary.
We know the disagree - I keep trying to get my hubby to listen to Emerson, Lake and Palmer - think that they are also that complex musical type - he is like you - don’t like them.
I just happen to love music and my play list runs the gambit from Junk Food Junkie to Beethoven.
Rush is like many things now days - you either love them or don’t.
Now we agree! ELP, Lucky Man. Wonderful, if sad song.
Junk Food Junkie, wasn’t that Larry Groce?
You know, some of the ELP guys got together later and called themselves Asia.
Having once worked in the recording industry and been a guest at more then one session over some years, I wonder if the practice of overspending and wasting studio time which cost hundreds and hour in my day, have been curtailed by the economy.
I once watched a recording session where two hours were spent (at least) going over one note that the act wanted better. While the meter ran on. I’ll grant that a say, violinist will hear things the average listener will never hear. And especially on a radio in a car. Point is anyway, I saw thousands spent on just studio time alone. And ppl sometimes wondered why albums cost so much. In theory, studio time was often supposed to come out of the royalties due the act if the album sold well. Big if. But id not, the record company ate the cost and in the end might drop an act. But is all costs and I wonder if the record execs are tightening their own belts first, and watching recording costs. As I say, to be fair. Perhaps these days they are. In my days, it looked like a waterfall made of money.
Welcome back peiper (hmmm, maybe a TV sitcom? Welcome Back Peiper. What? It’s been done? Damn!)
We definitely need your experience. I don’t ever wanna go all OWS unless I know the facts. And then there’s peiper, with the facts. Thank you peiper.
