  1. Drew, I’ve had a similar but not near as bad situation stemming from a similar problem. My shower decided to start leaking inside the wall. Imagine standing in the shower and noticing a tile at a bit of angle - you press on the corner and there’s little to no drywall behind it.

So, buy a new fixture (which is special because of my son’s needs), remove the drywall and tile on that side of the tub and launch into the fun of “Fix this leak”.

After a few different plumbing connectors (US standard is 8” between pipe centers but the new fixture is 6") and a few trips to the local supply store it’s finally working with no leaks.

Next is to finish removing all the adhesive from the tiles, put up the new dry wall, and then remount the tiles. So after at least a month, we at least have a working shower.

Thank God we at least have a water cutoff in the house. Still, it took over two weeks of water on, crap it’s still leaking, water off, try this fix, crap it’s still leaking - do this different and try again. When my brain kicked in, I put in shutoff valves for the shower fixture itself and that garbage ended.

Still, it’s cheaper than spending the $1500+ for a plumber to fix it.
