HR2640 also passes
(2) convicted of misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence.
Am I missing something here? When did we start taking away peoples rights for misdemeanor offenses.I have a co-worker with a minor misdemeanor domestic assault conviction for telling his ex-wife to get off her fat ass and get a job.It was one of those not worth the trouble to fight deals and now he’s marked for life?????????
Yes you are. It’s called the Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act 1997, brought to you by that winner from NJ, Frank Lautenberg. Who is still in office BTW, and still a flaming leftist. The Amendment was supposed to halt domestic abuse. It did nothing but remove 2A rights for a specific misdemeanor offense. Seriously - if I punched you in the nose and got busted for it, I’d still have my guns. But if I got busted for socking my wife (not a smart idea; I have to sleep sometime and we have lots of knives and super glue around here) then they’d be gone. Poof. Forever.
Think it’s pretty egregious? The other part of his wonder legistlation disarms a domestic partner who has had a restraining order filed against him. No due process at all; the cops come and take your hardware. Good luck getting it back too.
More sickness: this thing was supported by SCOTUS in 2001. In practice it is not fully enforced, and some people have been able to regain their 2A rights by getting their legal records expunged, but that often takes years.
Most twisted aspect: the anti-gun folks and the all-men-are-evil-and-potential-molesters crowd are upset that these rights are not revoked permanently.
Thats what sucks it was a verbal “assault”.I have seen many domestic arguments that were a lot worse.I know a few people with gross misdemeanor offenses,DWI,possession, battery etc.and they walk into the cop shop apply for a purchase permit and two days latter they get it.Go figure.
Lautenberg sure as hell is enforced here @.mil land! Once convicted, you are well and truly screwed.
Just wait until being a Christian, a Conservative, or merely a member of the NRA becomes a mental illness…
And the prize goes to Babylonandon for finding the sooper seckrit hidden adgenda!!!
I think that might be a little bit down the road, but “normal” is the consensus view, and with government thought policing (U of Delaware anybody?) such a possibility is not that far fetched. Anybody remember Larry Niven’s Madness Has It’s Place and what the autodoc could do, and the culture behind it? Doesn’t seem so far fetched these days does it?
Oh, and if you think the autodoc is total fantasy, read this and then this. I’d give it at most 20 years before it becomes a common reality. As for the personality control drugs, well ...
Keeps it all interesting. I try not to get too far from normal, but not everyone agrees.
Other bits for gov’t control scenarios: This Perfect Day, a book by Ira Levin and THX1138 (either movie version).
