Called my dad and thanked him for his service again this year. He was just 18 when he shipped out of San Francisco as a Lt.jg assigned as gunnery officer on a seaplane tender. A couple of years ago I had the privilege of replacing his ribbons and medals lost in time. No silver stars or Navy Crosses, but he was there in the thick of it.
He came back and deferred his love of history to work in the family business, then in banking and finally went back to school for his masters and doctorate in international studies. He’s retired now and still sets the bar high.
