  1. The civilized world being what it is, confirmation from the pharmacy back to the doctor should be electronic and should only take a minute or two. And a refill, from the same doctor to the same pharmacy, should be done in even less time. Send an email, fax, or just pick up the phone. A week? Not on your life ... literally!

The local pharmacy does not get my business because they are lazy and it takes them too long to fill a ‘scrip - about an hour. Instead I take them up the hill to Walmart, and they get filled in less than 15 minutes. It only takes a few seconds to count out some pills, and some software prints out a label. And all the warning notices, drug interaction lists, and all the other dross that you get handed these days. I don’t even use a pen to sign for the things; instead it’s one of those electronic signature thingies which also allows me to use my credit card to pay for the drugs at the same time.

Sounds to me like pharmacy workers in England are all union members whose relatives sit on the local councils. Nearly a sinecure. Isn’t this what they call a jobsworth?

  2. I dont know whether to laugh or cry at this story but frankly Im still laughing my ass off at Chris Miurs Day by Day about Queen Nancy.’Blob of Grease’, Priceless.

  3. Last winter, eldest daughter needed amoxicillin for a double-ear infection.  Her family doctor took one look in eldest daughter’s ears, and immediately went to the computer workstation in the diagnostic room to electronically send the prescription over to my favorite pharmacy.  After he sent it, he then called them on the telephone to tell them to fill it immediately, and that we were on the way over to pick it up, NOW.  When we walked in the door 3 minutes later (small town), it was ready.

Two days to get a prescription filled, or a week to get them refilled in England?  Insanity.

  4. And here (with our governmint insur) I thought having to wait until the last days to call in our refills (beyond a week - they won’t approve it) was sucky. I use a national chain (we had local but realized about a year ago, we might not stay local, so switched) - great, I just go online put in the refill and pick it up next day (can pick it up that day usually but am too lazy to get dressed late in the day (to go out - not that I sit around all day in jammies). My son is on auto notify - and they send me an email (I do the order for him, he’d never bother) when it is time to refill. And when he gets his infections - the script is waiting by the time we get there.

The only bother in the whole system is our Drs. office (actually it is a Group with two offices) lab - they screw up the charge almost every single time - and much as I protest (even mailed them the insurance with the amount due patient to pay to prove it) he had to double pay [with governmint insur - we’ve never won those ‘wrong’ charges fight at all - it is the only money we had to personally shell out for his medical care for the burn] - so I gave up and go to the local hospital - they’ve never screwed up the charging and have a couple of people in the lab who can get blood from him without a problem.

Your pharm system seems more like our DMV - the youngest took the old buick to STL for a concert - I was trying to find where my hubby had stuffed the current regis & insur - and found that they had listed the vehicle (for the stupid handicap placard) under my son’s name - what morons - he can’t drive & has no license - how anyone can think that governmint can do it better just proves how damn stupid they are.

I just can’t wait until Uncle Obamacare kicks in (NOT, still hoping someone in the GOP grows a backbone in NOv) for people to see just how screwed up, idiotic and NOT FREE the system will become.

  5. I don’t think it’s the rule of the pharmacy but just the way it’s done and has been done for a very long time.

A new Rx can be filled at once of course. The doc hands it to you and you take it to pharmacy.  This one week and two day thing is on refills.
Altho in my wife’s case, someone misplaced or lost her Rx.  As I said, its happened before.

A long time ago someone in the village here asked me what I missed most about home. Well, aside from everything .... I told them our system of getting an Rx filled on a refill was much faster and more efficient.  They took insult at that saying, oh. You Americans always know better.  (Well actually, ...) but they didn’t want to know.
