I started labeling certain things in the last year or so. Spices I buy bulk, All Dairy and sometines eggs. Meat products I rarely buy more than I can use in a week at best.

After taking a Gourmet cooking course - I label everything that goes into the frig and freezer - even some of those questionable condiments as to when I opened it. Speaking of that - we have gochujang and German curry ketchup just sitting around in the back of the frig. Son’s experiments - we are not sure what we will do with them now.
If it is on the shelf to be sold - about a year past.
Any thing with meat or dairy - not much beyond days past the date. Fresh/frig sell - by date if you are lucky it lasts that long.
What you are going through - is why Pepto is always in our house!
Oh yeah - when I returned from Germany the first time and stopped with the kids (my ex, never went to visit my mom, one of the many reasons he is an ex) - I opened her frig and almost everything was wrapped in foil. I told the kids not to touch as it was probably moved down from Ohio (about 2 years prior) and not edible at all.
