  2. clap  Hambone wins the Golden Compass Trophy today in six minutes flat.

Does anyone here NOT know who “Hap” Arnold was?

I was surprised when I discovered this base in Tennessee. I had never heard of it before. The base web site (http://www.arnold.af.mil/) has some pretty interesting stuff and come way cool pictures of the facilities. This is rocket science. If any youngsters out there are deeply science-minded but also want a career in the military with a chance to play with the latest aerodynamic and rocket science, talk to your recruiter and see if he can finagle you a slot at Arnold. Beautiful Tennessee countryside and rocket science. Too much fun!

(C’mon! Every now and then I have to put in a pitch for the kids out there to get them interested in a USAF career.)

  3. Heck, I even spotted you a four-minute head start...didn’t hit the site until 1504hrs but then your logs will show that.

An AFIT buddy of mine was the Center commander’s XO out there some years ago.  Seemed like a real interesting place.

And yes, Skip, there is an entire career field in the USAF for scientists and research types...not so big as it used to be, though...there’s some really neat high-power laser and directed energy stuff going on out at Kirtland, for example…

  4. I used to work here.  I got written up by the union because I turned on a vacuum pump.  “That is a union job.” The motors that run the wind tunnels are VERY large.  Around the size of a two story house.  And they have a direct feed from TVA.  They use lots of electricity.

  5. I don’t know.  I still thik it looks like Luckenbach Inter-Galactic Airport.  Hell, you can almost see Willy Nelson’s hemp-powered Gulfstream parked on the tarmac.
