  1. If you’re talking B2s then you’re talking about Whitehead AFB, Missouri.

  2. *Corrects self* Whiteman, that is.

Congratulations, Severa! You got it on the second try! Yes, that is Whiteman AFB, out yonder to the West of me, close to Kansas City but out in the Missouri boonies.

You have finally won the GOLDEN COMPASS TROPHY outright and are now officially a ZOOMIE!

    YAYYY!

    LOL  LOL  LOL

  4. Yup, there’s only one B-2 base.

For 20 trivia points, Skip:  who’s the host wing at Whiteman, and what’s the historical significance of that wing?

  5. trophy

This Sat in Louisville they’re kicking off the Kentucky Derby Festival with an event known as ‘Thunder over Louisville’ It’s a HUUUUGE airshow topped off with an awesome fireworks display over the Ohio River. On more than one occasion at this show I’ve seen the B2 make a grand appearance. *looks at this years lineup* OOOH it looks like they got it again this year SWEET.

We’ll most likely be watching the webstream of the show on Louisville’s local CBS affiliate WLKY http://www.wlky.com/

  6. Wikipedia says the host is the 509th Bomb Wing but there is no history on that unit. DO I get 10 points?

    LOL

  7. The 509th Bomb Wing inherited the lineage of the 509th Composite Group, and so is the only active unit to have historical combat experience with atomic weapons.

The Wikipedia entry isn’t too bad:

  8. Here’s the wiki entry on the 509 OG, it makes the lineage a little clearer:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/509th_Operations_Group

If you were only looking at the Whiteman wiki, it wouldn’t have been very clear.

I almost forgot:  Knob Noster, Missouri, was the object of some kind of continuing joke with some of the NCO’s that worked for me once upon a time.  I could never pry the whole story out of them, probably just as well.  Heck, I figured the name alone was worth a chuckle grin.

  10. Whiteman as an actual B-29, a replica of the Enola Gay, at its main gate.  General Paul Tibbets grandson, Lt. Colonel Paul Tibbets IV is presently stationed at Whiteman and is a B-2 pilot and commander of the 393rd Bomb Squadron.

Here’s some good video of the B-2.

  11. I thought there were some B-2s at Mountain Home? Or was that one of the canceled groups?

  12. The two B-29s that dropped the Atomic Bombs on JApan were built not more then 20 miles from me at the Martin Bomber plant in Bellevue, Nebraska. Today that building now serves as the base gym and as an admin building forthe 55th wing at Offutt AFB.

  13. No B-2’s at Mountain Home and I don’t think there were ever plans to bring them there.  The B-2 requires its own environmentally controlled facilities.  You’ll notice the hangers on the right side of the parking ramp.  Each aircraft has its own hangar where it’s kept.  The large hangars on the left, to the back, is where your heavy maintenance is done along with fuel cell work.  Mountain Home didn’t have enough facilities to support their own KC-135’s when they were a compost wing.
