That would be Sarge’s first duty assignment, Back in 1985, Uncle saw fit to send a young airman from St. Louis, MO to OSAN AB, Republic of Korea!
*does some piddling around on globalsecurity.org*
I’ll take a stab and say Osan Air Base, South Korea
Not Kunsan or Osan, but I believe that is Suwon AB, Republic of Korea.
Hehehehehe. I’m afraid Sarge wins the Golden Compass Trophy today, gang!
That is indeed lovely Osan AFB just a short distance south of Seoul in the city of Osan, South Korea and scene of a famous battle ...
On 5 July 1950 the first Korean War battle between North Korean and U.S. forces designated “Task Force Smith”, was fought just a few miles north of the base.
It was here 56 years ago that nine soldiers from the 27th Infantry Division “Wolfhounds” died from fighting a bayonet charge up Hill 180 against the enemy.
They drove us back but we eventually pushed back and fought them to a standstill (no thanks to their ChiCom buddies). The curfew lives on because technically we’re still in a state of war between the two countries. They only signed an armistice. Fifty years later they still glare at each other across the DMZ.
My bad. I forgot that Suwon was closed and the A-10s were moved to Osan. Spent a year there in the 1980s (Osan) and it was a very interesting tour. As for the DMZ comment - NO KIDDING!! Those North Koreans either wouldn’t or couldn’t do anything but snear/snarl. Nothing funny about those little jokers.
Hey I didn’t do bad, Sarge only beat me by 2 minutes Not bad for my first try with the Zoomies…
Hard to beat the guy who loved Osan so much he volunteered to go back. That is also where Sarge met CINCHOUSE
For coming in a VERY close 2nd place today, we are going to name you an Honorary Zoomie, Severa.
WOOHOO Honorary Zoomie Sweet!
Song Tan Up always smelled like a wet dog. Was there 73-74. Got a wild story about the wind chief of maint. getting fired.
