  1. 1. In an emergency, you are permitted to land at a military installation- in this case, an airforce base- since you have no radio, you will have to fly circles, with your landing light on, outside the traffic pattern,( 5 nautical miles ) and look for light signals to land, most likely, a red light will be given- since the plane is civilian and they ( the tower) don’t know that the radio is out. You can squawk on the transponder a code for “radio out”, but if it is truly an emergency, you must continue to set up for the landing, and be ready for a crap load of paper work once you land.

2.Civilians fly approaches to military bases all the time, they just can’t land there - except in the case of an emergency.

    3. You would fly in a circle waiting for a light signal from the tower- a flyby to wave you are friendly is a no no. You want to be in contact with the tower- you can do this with no radio, by using the transponder to SQUAWK a code that the radio is out, and by use of landing light.

4.Well, hopefully if you are flying a private aircraft- you have aviation insurance- if you are basing this on being *shot down* for landing at this base...not the case- even with those beautiful B2 bombers located at the 3 oclock position in the satellite picture- you CAN land at millitary bases in a true emergency situation. Be ready to answer up and fill out loads and loads of paperwork.

    5. You are over Whiteman AFB MO.

  2. B2’s are staged out of Whiteman- but i concur-
I have NO clue if this is whiteman.

  3. BobF-
    i don’t think this is Edwards…
Edwards has criss crossing runways, and a giant lake bed on one side of the runways… those features are not depicted here

  4. You’re both wrong. You’re in worse trouble than you thought.

    LOL

Posted by The Skipper    United States   03/12/2006  at  05:07 PM

  5. My hubby and I could not find it, although Whiteman was the logical answer.

Posted by wardmama4    United States   03/12/2006  at  05:07 PM

  6. Well gee...it could be Diego Gargia - oh NO it can’t be , you would see water- since it is an island in the middle of no where

Guam- sure doesn’t look like it- not enough greenery

When Iraq was bombed by B2’s, they were staged from MO, to Iraq, and back,so as not to chance a 2 billion dollar aircraft loss on the ground in Iraq.

So, Skipper, if you are talking about this base being elsewhere( like overseas in a possible hostile environment, or even to be staged overseas in a place yet to be mentioned in comments -the odds that a U.S.privately owned small aircraft being in the area are negligible at best.

More of the runway being depicted , or surrounding area depiction would be nice for determining if this is a per se no fly zone, etc-(ie: washington dc has a no fly zone 90 miles radius from downtown DC capital proper.)

If the AFB is located within the US, then i stand firmly by items 1 through 4 in post number 3. And even if it were a no fly zone in the US, you would be escorted out of the no fly area by fighter escort,or even the escort may fly off your wing until you land. The AF is NOT going to shoot you down if you are making an attempt to indicate radio failure by the methods mentioned in my earlier post, and attempting to land- sure- if you are acting in a hostile manner with no radio contact, and no indication of landing light, or radio transponder SQUAWK code to signal radio failure- then you are in trouble. However, you state in the mission profile- that the plane comes out of the clouds and sees this- <shrug>

  8. Well, it ain’t Diego Garcia, it ain’t Whiteman, it ain’t Fairford UK, it ain’t Edwards, it ain’t Barksdale....

WE know a lotta places it AIN’T!!! crash

Posted by Crawdaddy550    United States   03/12/2006  at  05:29 PM

  9. well...i don’t see any magnetic heading runway numbers on the end of the runway, as would be seen on US airfields....so i have to say, this is OUT of the US…

therefore, other country requirements apply for emergency landing protocol, dependant upon the country.

ICAO is usually what is followed in most other countries- but again- it depends on the country.

  13. Good guess, U2 but no cigar.

Everybody give up? You’re all gonna kick yourselves when I tell you.

  14. Just tell us already!!!!

Posted by U2warrior05    United States   03/12/2006  at  05:58 PM

  15. I’m just gonna guess that it’s a US Air Force base…

Unless Skipper decided to change the pic URL and REALLY throw us off…

Otherwise, I really don’t know. Somewhere out west, maybe?

Posted by Severa    United States   03/12/2006  at  06:00 PM

  16. if it is located within the US- best guess Nellis AFB

if out of US- best guess is in the UAE somehwere- but i just DONT think so.

and- even AFB runways have the magnetic headers on the runway...so, that stumps me

  17. Comrades,

Well, if it’s the F-117’s of the 37th Tactical Fighter Wing, then that could well be Tonopah AFB in Nevada, although the Air Force won’t admit that it actually exists, so to speak.....

    I may well be half-blind (literally) but I don’t see any B-2’s on the ramps. I see F-117’s, some KC-135’s, a C-130 and I believe a few A-10’s… but no B-2’s…

If it’s Tonopah then they can simply dispose of the body and claim you were never there.... sigh .....

If it’s overseas, then it’s likely in Saudi Arabia, althoug I forget the name of the base…

    Respects,

    Gwedd

  18. OK! OK!

Although technically, you are not in any real danger now I would not recommend buzzing the tower. The best thing to do is get your plane on the ground as quickly as possible on any of the runways down there. Exit the plane, lie down on the ground with your hands in plain site and prepare for a shitstorm.

The problem is you are already dead if you’ve been wandering around in the clouds surrounding this base. Why? Because it is the most restricted airspace in CONUS. From ground level to infinity. There is an awful lot of ordinance flying around the skies where you were.

Here is a map to help you out ....

  19. So it’s Nellis AFB, right?

If so that means *points to SouthernDoll* She wins.

Posted by Severa    United States   03/12/2006  at  06:16 PM

  20. Yep. She wins the prize. Although it took her about forty-eleventeen guesses.

    i got it right. cheese

Just a thought....If you’re a competent pilot, worth anything,...Once you entered the cloud bank- you would have started a standard rate turn of 180 degrees, and left the cloud bank, hence you would have never had to bust out of the clouds later. smile

  22. Hey I guessed ONCE and said it was a US Air Force base out west.
From my perch in Topsham, Maine that means I got second place.
    On ONE guess LOL

Posted by Severa    United States   03/12/2006  at  06:21 PM

  23. Indeed, Severa wins the Silver Medal for being closest with the fewest guesses.

They guys here (especially those who, like me, served in the USAF) have some ‘splaining to do.

That was fun though! Tune in next Sunday for another episode of “LOST”.

(now all I gotta do is dream up a rip-off of “24” and we’re in business)

  26. (As I tune-in a bit late...) Skipper, if that rather high-def photo really is Nellis...... YOU’RE UNDER ARREST.  My “staff” should be at your door in about 11 minutes.  Shoulda ‘fessed-up to OCM’s brilliantly-contrived suggestion at post #8.

  27. Nellis AFB!?!  Naw, you’re yanking us again.  Can’t be Nellis.

Looks like the Luckenbach International Airport.  The Kinky Freidman Memoral Terminal and Massage Parlor are over at the 12 o’clock position and the Willie Nelson Smoking Lounge is around back.

  28. I know it’s military and I know there is a ‘no fly zone’ over military bases, but in an emergency I would, and could, land there.  With no radio, I would ‘waggle’ the wings, fly in circles, and hope they got the message.  I would continue to click the ‘mike’ using Morse Code (s-o-s) just in case I might ‘squelch’ the radio’s receiver way down there on land.  I might also drop a silk ‘hanky’ or pair of southern ‘drawers’ out the window to let them know I was a female, southern bell in desparate need of a gentleman to lend a helpin’ hand.  Y’all.

  30. gewdd:  can’t be Tonapah… they don’t have housing out there (been there on TDY in the 80’s when the 4450th TG was still a secret)

dunno why the AF denies it’s existance.. Tonapah can be easily found by anyone with half a brain..

  31. BULL shit ! It’s AREA 51! Anyone trying to land there will be vaporized by a disintegrator beam. The bastards don’t set them on ‘stun’ here. You can clearly see the hangers for the UFOs. They control Congress, the Supreme Court, and the White House.

Several BMEWSers are aliens in disguise. HINT: “Good AM!”

Posted by Oink    United States   03/13/2006  at  06:59 AM

  32. It’s Nellis.  Go to Google Earth and type in Nellis AFB.  You won’t see any B-2s in Googles pic, but it’s clearly the same base.

All those damn planes sure leak a lot, don’t they?

Posted by Crawdaddy550    United States   03/13/2006  at  08:16 AM

  33. I’ve seen similar, but lower resolution sat pics of Area 51, it doesn’t look anything like this.

Posted by Rat Patrol    United States   03/13/2006  at  08:47 AM

  34. The magnetic markers are there at the southwestern end of the runways. It looks to me like runways 23 L & R. The northeastern end is not in the photo, but I’m sure it would have the opposite number as well, which would be 5, I believe. It’s certainly not Area 51, because there would not be the extensive and rather civilian-looking city to the northwest.

  36. "Area 51” is the pic in link in post #35

Nellis != Area 51.. (which is really the Tonapah test range.. and yes there was a hangar 18 there.. when I was there no shit it was a bar.. that’s where we went to drink, and drink we did!)

here’s an expanded shot of Nellis..  http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=nellis+afb&ll=36.236174,-115.034409&spn=0.046107,0.080423&t=k

  37. But since “area 51 officially doesn’t exist, then it’s only figmentary…

Actually there is an “Area 51”, the Nellis test range, back when it was prime nuking grounds, the property was subdivided into roughly square parcels, each with a number, and there is an “Area 51” on that map, and it is the same place as That Place Which Does Not Officially Exist.

    Merely a co-inki-dink, I am sure.
