Hmm… ClearChannel billboard number 5216 in LA… I’d bet that, given enough calls in to complain, this could be taken down. Also, let CC know that you will be calling their advertisers, as well, and urging the advertisers to pull their own ads until this sign is pulled.
Yeah, it ain’t much; that sign is a symptom, not the cause, but one has to start somewhere.
Time to burn a billboard, I’d say.
Yep burn away
The sad thing is ... it’s all too true.
Too bad that is the mentality in LA, even among the police.
I’ve been there. They can have the whole effin’ state for all I care. six months, tops, and they’ll be begging us to take it back.
I remember San Jose too, was stationed just down the road at NAS Moffett Fld. And my ex was from Santa Clara. Haven’t been back to that neck of the woods since my last (and second) tour of duty out there in 85-87. Can’t say I miss it at all.
As for the sign, torch, gas, sign, some disassembly required.
(And what ever happened to stations like “The perfect 36” which had billboards with Carol Doda on them....now *that* used to stop traffic!!)
I came to the U.S. (legally) in 1957, was naturalized in 1966, served in the U.S.Navy and I think of myself as American. I enjoy the bounty of culture that other immigrants, who also have become American, have brought with them. Lasagne is MUCH better than haggis, I assure you, but Johnny Walker is better than ouzo, in my opinion.
I was raised in a neighborhood with mostly Polish, Hungarian, German and Italian immigrants and their progeny. Everybody was American. There was no “dial 2 for Polish, dial 3 for Italian”, etc. on service center telephones, but you could hit “ethnic” stores and do business in the that language OR English. Children and grandchildren were often bilingual, but they were American.
The difference in our “new immigrants” is that they don’t want to become American, they want the rest of us to become Mexican, or they want to take over parts of our country for Mexico (probably both). They make no bones about it with their organizations like La Raza, etc.
This billboard just proves that we’re being invaded and we are paying for the “privilege” by supporting them through social welfare, education and hospital emergency rooms.
I’m totally in favor of LEGAL immigration, it would be churlish not to be, but we MUST take control of our borders and control who’s getting in and encourage them to become American.
I have had the privilege of eating in real Mexican restaurants run by the American descendants of legal immigrants, with someone to tell me what the strange (to me) foods were and make recommendations. This was in the days before [spit] Taco Bell. It was great.
By all means, invite them to bring their culture with them, but they should also enjoy and become part of ours. It’s very rewarding and doesn’t hurt at all.
Thanks, OCM.
As you probably know then, getting permanent immigration status isn’t quick and easy. At least it wasn’t when my family got our green cards. I believe that we all trekked to the consulate twice, for medical exams and pictures for the green card. I don’t know how many times my parents went for whatever reasons. The process took months, IIRC. I was a kid, so I’m not clear on the time period involved.
My father had to prove that he would be employable, he was a millwright and that may have gotten us higher on the waiting list.
We also had to secure sponsors who would be responsible for us and guarantee that we wouldn’t end up on welfare. My mother’s aunt and uncle, also immigrants, were our sponsors. I’m guessing that criminal checks were run on my parents too.
Looking at this site I don’t think it’s much easier than it was fifty years ago.
I agree that we should be watching the student, worker and visitor visas much more closely and be better at tracking down those who don’t leave when they should. That’s how most of the 9/11 perps got in.
I’m guessing that the permanent resident candidates are still screened pretty well. It’s the temporary visas that need more attention/limiting and we damn sure need to secure and control our borders much better.
Vincente Fox. Paul Martin too, for that matter. Neither one has done us any favors in recent memory.
OCM, You know the hangers and the buildings you would see upon entering what used to be the base are now historical monuments.
And I understand a bit about immagration as well, only second generation American, grandparents on both sides where brought over from their respective “old countries” or did so under their own power. But they all upon becoming naturalized, considered themselves Americans. There was never any ____-American in any side of the family. It is sad to see this important distiction has been lost over the years.
