How much is the Marlin?
McGoo - I found one at gunbroker for $725, fired a few times but tricked out with all the usual 1895 upgrades, and a meh scout scope. Plus the usual $30 shipping and whatever the transfer fee your local FFL charges.

I found a NIB one for $590.

A competitive local gun shop ought to be able to beat that. I know my guy can.
This model has only been on the market a couple months, so a “used” one is still pretty much brand new.
I don’t know what the difference is between an 1895ABL and an 1895GBL. Both have 18.5” barrel and big loop lever. I think the ABL has black/gray stock, GBL has brown/black stock.
NIB ABL, $450: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=168839756
If you don’t mind the stainless steel/black laminate look, you can find an 1895XLR for $675. This is the most accurate 1895 ever made, and the 24” barrel will give you the maximum velocity. Add your own WWG big loop lever and trigger when money allows. When Marlin makes an “1895GBLXLR” with black coated stainless I’m buying it.
You can find 1895s with barrels from 16.25” to 24”; there are lots of models, limited editions, and even ones with fancy wood stocks and octagonal barrels. The older ones have MicroGroove rifling, the new ones have Ballard rifling. You want Ballard if you are using lots of cast lead bullets.
A plain jane 1895, 22” ballard rifled barrel, walnut pistol grip stock and blue steel goes for under $500 new.
Damn....ask a li’l question and you do the whole research effort! Thanks! I really appreciate it!
Those numbers are within my budget ... unfortunately. Now I must exercise that boring so-called virtue other adults call discipline. Over-rated, in my book.
I’ve got a TC/Contender hunter barrel in 45-70, and originally had a rifle barrel. But it just kicked too damned much for my poor ol’ shoulder with that hard TC rifle stock butt - so I traded it. The hunter barrel just bruises my hand.
I’d like a good long-distance-thrower in 45-70 that has a good stock pad. Since I reload, I could tailor really nice rounds for the thing.
And I love that Marlin has told Yankeeland to bugger off! I’ve linked this post at mine, so you may get a few reads from there. Comments? Maybe. I want one!
