It could be worse-in ill-ANNOY we don’t even have the death penalty(we’ve got a moratorium on it) anymore.
Right before he left office “Lyin’ George” Ryan commuted the death sentences of ALL those on Illinois death row.
some of those spared included three monsters-a female and 2 males-who shot the pregnant girlfriend of one of them and CUT OUT the soon to be born baby from her womb.
It gets worse. The victim was white her"guy" was black-she had one child by him already-she also had two white kids from a prior relationship.
Both those kids-a seven year old boy and a ten year old girl were murdered-strangled and stabbed to death!
The baby and the other child are being raised by their maternal grandfather.
When the murderers of his mother and half siblings were taken off of death row the older boy-then 8- asked his grandfather why.
It burns me up that my taxes are having to pay for themthe killers- to live in relative comfort.
Why? I want to know.
ACK!!! ACK!!! This is not the OCM I know.
Not sure about TX, but CA spends almost 2 million per death sentence in automatic appellate litigation. It is cheaper to keep ‘em alive.
And Barry Scheck has found too many that were wrongly convicted on death row.
There are a bunch of islands in the Aluetians that would make dandy prisons.
I’m of the opinion that the death penalty should be held to a higher standard than the “beyond a reasonable doubt” that a guilty verdict requires. I’m not sure exactly what it would be, but there should be something more. Certainly more than circumstantial evidence.
Innocent people have been convicted and executed. Some got lucky and were exonerated before execution.
It’s a shame that the creatures that Barb references got out of the death penalty, but enough evidence was presented in enough other cases to show that there were innocent people on death row.
IIRC the governor (Ryan?) was compelled to release some and chose to commute the rest of the sentences to life because of the doubt generally cast on the death sentences in Illinois.
We have had cases of witnesses lying, even the occasional police officer lying to get a conviction.
What really pisses me off is when irrefutable evidence comes up that clears someone already convicted the prosecutors fight it tooth and nail and try to limit the time available to prove innocence. I guess they have a scorecard to protect and they don’t give a damn about right and wrong.
