  1. Drew, living about two hours south of the region in question . . . okay, maybe an hour-and-a-half of the Lower Hudson Gorge . . . this is going to be big for the town of Ticonderoga, and maybe North Hudson and a few others whose names I can’t recall at the moment.  I deer hunt in the Town of Lewis, and logging is a pretty important industry up there.  North Hudson had a uranium mine which closed in 1986, and the uranium went to the NL Industries nuclear weapons manufacturing plant that used to be on Central Avenue in Albany (the uranium may also have gone to an NL Industries installation in Tupper Lake, too).  It doesn’t have a whole lot of other income opportunities.  FP has (or had?) a paper plant in Ticonderoga.  Logging on their former lands will get some tax money to said towns.

Yes, it’s incredibly hypocritical.  And, I agree with your assessment of the Nature Conservancy.

  2. If by Purchasing Forest land, The Nature Conservancy has been able to negotiate as a condition of sale, Desired conditions, that it feels are important I find nothing wrong with that.  Is this not the Market at work?
Where I live there is still some Logging.
Streamside Buffer Zones Increasing in width according to the Slope Angle help prevent Erosion.
In our watershed we still have Horse drawn Log removal to prevent petroleum pollutants,
    Including Diapers for the Horses.
In other areas we have Selective Thinning and in yet others Helicopter Logging.
Not really a Greenie personally, But I do cring at some Clear cuts and Monoculture.
The Buffer Zones along Highways generally preserve a nice view of the Forest
so you don’t normally see the Clear cuts.
Have you guessed by now?  It’s Oregon.
