Just another way to make all the realities of life - detached, brief, and as meaningless as possible.
You can’t imagine the ‘comments’ (nice way to put it) when my Mom had my Dad’s ‘laying out’ at our house. She had many, many good reasons - but a lot of people just thought it was her ‘crazy’ on overdrive. I felt it was weird with the open casket in the living room - a a tad unnerving at times. But when the groups (VFW, Medical, et al) all wanted to honor him - the little ‘services’ turned out to be really nice - and for all of them - quite private.
It all used to be at home - birth, life, and death.
Jimmy Carter is the last President who was born at home.
My daughter and I were in Washington, DC when former President Ford died - got to see Marine One fly President Bush back in or was it out? Too long ago to remember.
While I am glad that family members no longer have to wash and keep the body in the house until burial - drive through is just a tad too tasteless for me.
Always, it is now about ‘my two seconds’ are more important than anything else.
