  1. Click through the links to the original article. This woman did manage to make the run, 2 months later (and how much training was she doing in that time, eh?) when they increased the time allowed to 3 minutes. PLUS she started at the front of the pack, which is good for another 20 seconds.

“Full riot gear” isn’t all that much. It’s a motorcycle helmet and leathers, a few plastic pads, plus shin guards and clomp along paratrooper boots. The shield is a bit of plexiglass which I doubt weighs 7lbs. It’s not like they have to dress up like Roman Legionnaires and carry that 35lb scutum with them plus sword and spears.

1:17 is a decent time for a high school girl to run the 500m. Serious lady runners can manage it in a minute or less.

Failing the run did not cost her her job. It only cost her her slot to be one of the turnout troops in case of riots. Which probably gets the officers a bit of extra pay.

I can’t wait for the next riot in Manchester. The kids will have a blast watching the fat old slovenly cops chase them for 20 yards, then have to stop to catch their breath, have a beer and a cig.

I doubt that I’d last 5 minutes if I tried out to be a Ranger. I’m nearly 3 times the age of the kids going for it, and I could stand to lose quite a bit of blubber. So I’m not going to even think about it. But I’m not going to sue them either, and damned if I’ll support them lower their standards so an old fat oik like me can qualify.

The only valid criticism I can see for the riot run is that everyone should start at the starting line. Big deal, you have 10 races of 10 coppers each, instead of lumping 100 coppers all at once out on the track. Duh.
