  1. I don’t know what pisses me off more, hurricane victims buying designer goods and having lap dances with strippers using our tax money or the latest transportation bill that has so much Pork it’s unbelievable!  For example, you would think all the money in the transportation bill was for things like roads and bridges but when you look into it you find all these pet projects that have absolutely nothing to do with transportation.  The waste is just eye opening!  I know very little about economics but even I could go through all these spending bills with a red marker and slash the hell out of the government budget!

I think it would be great to have a reality show where the host goes through all the spending in these bills in detail and then puts pictures of the congressmen responsible for it along with their name, home state, and contact information!  Whoever lynches the senator to the nearest tree wins!  I also really dislike the way government is run by lobbyists.  It’s practically legal bribery!  Raise enough money and just shower a senator with gifts, free trips, hookers, etc. and you get the law written the way you want.

Remember that line item veto?  I doubt if it was what it said it was (I don’t believe it ever became law—Besides, I think Clinton was President at the time).  But it should be possible for the President to veto specific portions of a spending bill to cut the pork out.  i.e. slash several hundred of the spending line items without killing the whole bill and wasting time by having to go back and re-write the bill then resubmit it.

At the same time, I realize that this is how things have been done in the US government for a very very long time.  i.e. ‘you scratch my back and I scratch yours’ is how this works.  Vote to approve the bill with my spending line items and I will vote for the bill with your spending line items.  Meanwhile the tax payers get screwed.  But that’s the way it works.  Yeah, I know it sucks monkey balls!

  2. MJS - I love your idea in the 2nd paragraph.  Shine a big spotlight on all of the pork perps item by item with costs on national TV.  NBC evening news occasionally had a piece on waste in government, but it didn’t name the thief who organized the heist.  That pushes the outrage button but doesn’t give a focal point for the anger other than ‘Congress’, which is an amorphous entity rather than an addressable individual.  Your way would fix that.

  3. Frankly, if I were the potential host of such a reality show as MJS proposes, my first concern would be how long I might be left alive to host it....

    wink

  4. MJS-I think that’s a great idea and to protect Tannenberg, we’ll get a towel-head to host the show.

  5. Good riddance to the towel-head.
