  1. South Dakotans, start writing letters smile

  2. Lieberman is a tool if he plays forgive and forget with the Dems. If I were he, I’d go against the left out of spite most of the time. He really is in a power position if he plays his cards right.

I hope this guy comes through Ok, but sometimes a stroke has major consequences. Maybe he should retire just to be on the safe side.

  3. Phobs, you can just see it now. The Gov appoints a Republican, making a 50/50 Senate, THUD THUD THUD.

Then Joe jumps to caucus with the Repubs, making it 51/49 with Dickie casting additional votes and THUDTHUDTHUDTHUDTHUDTHUDTHUD.

    Tee hee

  4. Possible TIA (transient ischemic attack) ... a “mini-stroke” if you will. It isn’t good in the fact that it could mean that a bigger event is just around the corner waiting to happen. On the other hand, he’s being checked out by some of the best in the US and they DO take real good care of our congress critters. The fact that he seemed to snap out of it and walked back to his office is a good sign.

This probably means no more than someone’s vote is going to get paired until the doctors release him.

In the meantime, I do hope he is doing well and has no more problems.

  5. Update ........ conflicting stories ...... Reuter’s just put out an article that the gentleman in question had surgery ( their headline) and the NYT just mentions that he’s been hospitalized. They both immediately start speculating about what is going to happen if he doesn’t come back.

Geez, people, give the guy a break already. (MSM people) Phobos, I’m going to have to agree with you. Guess maybe the moonbattery has already begun.

  6. I take no pleasure in human suffering (unless its a northeast democrat, left coast liberal or race baiting-class warfare SOB politician). Don’t know much about him, but he’s probably just a confused human being so I wish him no ill will and pray for God’s mercy. If in fact he dies or becomes incapable of fulfilling his public duties, then let it be. The way the Donks have been behaving, it only serves them right.

  7. Putin did it, I just bet Putin did it.

  8. Ok, I just heard that he is critical after the surgery.

I am laughing about this, not because I am cold-hearted about the dems in our gov. but because the self-same lunatic left has been screeding about their ‘overwhelming’ victory in Nov - here they haven’t even assumed the position of ‘power’ and it is already slipping through their dirty little fingers. . . Some ‘overwhelming’ win that was. BTW, someone just might want to get a linguist in the dnc and msm - or at least someone with a dictionary, so they can get their stories right. One can only hope that Mr. Kerry finds himself captured in Iraq and Mr. Kennedy (either one) does another auto boo-boo under the influence (not enough to kill, mind you), just enough to keep them out of office say for another 20 years or so. . .

All I want for Christmas is a few more Dems to either grow brains and hearts or go down for at least 3 years. . .is that too much to ask?

  9. INSENSITIVITY ALERT!!!!!!!

Oh Why, Oh Why, couldn’t it have been Ted Kennedy (all those years of booze, drugs and bad living) or John F’ing Kerry question

    END INSENSITIVITY ALERT.

  10. There must be historical precedent to this. If I were the gov, I’d check that, listen to both parties at the state level and get some candidates and check the size of the Senator’s vistory; over X% win and it is clear the people wanted him, a democrat, in office, and I would follow that. If it was a slim victory, that would be a wash.

I do not envy the gov for the pressure he will be under should it come to having to appoint a successor. Any decision will be utterly nonsensical, wrong, stupid, partisan, wimpy etc etc etc to someone.

  11. Rickvid, Johnson was re-elected in 2002 with just under 50.08% of the vote. With 337,506 votes cast his margin of victory was only 527 votes. So there is no clear indication. The other Senator, Stephanie Herseth (D), that was just elected did get more than 2/3 of the votes. In 2002 Herseth lost in her bid to become a CongressCritter.

If it becomes necessary, maybe the governor should appoint a Republican to achieve balance and represent all the people?? I think it would be a smart move if he did, and political suicide if he didn’t.

  12. RE: historical precedent

In 1936, Mundt was the Republican candidate for the House of Representatives in South Dakota’s First District, losing to Fred H. Hildebrandt. He won the seat in the 1938 election and was re-elected four times. In 1948, he was elected to the Senate seat previously held by Harlan J. Bushfield. He resigned his House seat on December 30, 1948, after being appointed to the Senate to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Senator Vera C. Bushfield, who had succeeded her husband after his death in September 1948. Subsequently, he was reelected to the Senate in 1954, 1960 and 1966. After suffering a severe stroke in 1969, he remained in office through the end of his term on January 3, 1973, but was unable to attend sessions of Congress and was stripped of his committee assignments by the Senate Republican Conference in 1972. He did not seek reelection in 1972. He was succeeded in the Senate by James Abourezk.

BTW, his replacement, James Abourezk was a donk....

Interesting precedent - if only for the sake of debate.

Also note he suffered the stroke in 1969, was unable to attend sessions, but was not stripped of committee responsibilities until 72.
