  1. So it looks like one man’s behind both incidents. And a troubled loner at that.I’ll wait until things are cleared up and verifed before posting myself.

I must remind the Skipper that the first set of shootings is not usual for this sort of thing. Yes, the slaughter is often preceeded by one or two individual homicides, but this is the first done so publically.

The fact his weapons had the serial numbers filed down tells me he had other things going on. May have lost his girl friend to his illegal activities. Questions to answer would include his involvement in the drug trade, he possible drug use, and any connection he may have had with revolutionary and/or terrorist groups.

Speaking of the last, might a terrorist cell have been in contact with the shooter, and provided him the firearms and encouraged the man in his course of action?

  2. Interesting point mythusmage - a ‘test run’ as to if a ‘troubled loner’ persona would let the incident die quickly and not raise the suspicion of Homeland Security at all.

Ever watch that old Charles Bronson movie - Telfon? Scary thing to consider - assassins scattered around America, cued by only a word on a phone call. . .

Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it.

And typical liberal response - take even more power and guns away from the law abiding citizens. . .

Drugs, criminal activity, troubled jilted lover, or terrorists - Take ‘em down, jail forever or doa - explain how taking away or punishing the law abiding is going to ‘fix’ the problem - EVER.

  3. Peiper I noticed the BBC news also described pro gun people as “fanatics.” Typical of their left wing bias really. This is a tragedy but we need to let the dust settle before pronouncing judgement. Taking away guns would only lead to one thing. Armed criminals! Let us not forget four maniacs in Britain two years ago armed with flour and hair bleach succeeded in murdering 52 people. If a nut job wants to go on the rampage he or she will do it. The access to guns in the US will undoubtedly make it easier but anyone hell bent on murdering lots of people will always find a way.

  4. This tragic event has me wondering about the VT administration’s mindset regarding campus security. Its too early to place blame on anyone except the shooter, but in this day in age, all school campuses (elementary thru college) should have well defined security procedures that are well rehearsed. Thirty two people killed, scores injured over a two hour period in a relatively small area leads me to believe that VT’s security program is non existent or a total joke.

I suspect VT is not unlike most other universities across America who have chosen political correctness over logic and reason. If Al Queda didn’t see universities as soft targets before, they certainly see them that way now.

  5. Put me in the fanatic catagory.

Why must we be pop-up targets for the trolls?  All the police can do is draw a white outline around your dead body.  They can only record the details of a past incident.

Why must I and my family be sacrificed on the alter of political correctness?

I was late in renewing my CCL.  This is yet another incident that makes me nervous without it.  I can’t legally carry until I have it in hand again.

This could happen in any school, any church, any mall, any store, any neighborhood in the United States.  Why are we not allowed to defend ourselves?

I am past all rational thought on this.  My guns, my choice, my survival!

  6. MAJ Mike,

There is an analogy that I heard from a law enforcement friend that draws a parallel between human and animal hierarchy.

Human society is not much different than the relationship between sheep, sheepdog and wolf.

Sheep are completely passive with no means to defend themselves and must rely on some other entity to protect it.

The wolf is aggressive and has the means of taking what it wants. It preys on sheep because they are defenseless.

The sheepdog is domesticated but has the means to defend itself and bears the responsibility to defend others.

To extend the analogy out a bit further, if there are not enough sheepdog to disuade the wolf from attacking the sheep, the shephard (i.e. The Government) needs to increase the number of sheepdog.

You my friend are not a fanatic, you are a fellow sheep dog.

  9. Huh!  27 guns in the average family.

I only have 12.  What’s the Brit paper’s source of information?  Sounds like they’re making it up just as most “Gun Fearing Wussies” do.  I believe that California and LA have some rather restrictive firearms laws.

Did they mention how many people in Japan are murdered with swords and knives?

What’s the “tool” of choice in the UK?

Has anyone flashed to the fact that these incidents occur in “Gun Free” zones, not at shooting ranges or NRA conventions?

  10. Interesting that the first cartoon posted is by the anti gun cartoonist Jeff Koterba from the Omaha World Hearald.

  11. Here are the official FBI figures on homicides in the US for that last five years:

  12. What’s interesting is that over 40,000 people are killed in automobile accidents every year but nobody talks about taking our cars away.

BTW, that figure comes from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Here is the web site if you want to see a breakdown:
