  1. You’re NOT going to believe this:

Husband calls yesterday, they’ve evacuating them this morning…

to an elementary school 20 minutes north of where they are now…

I’m kinda new to hurricanes so bear with me but is moving 20 minutes north REALLY gonna make THAT much of a difference?

  2. Twenty minutes is about 15-20 miles. They’ll still get hit with the high winds and have to worry about flying debris but it may be enough to get them to higher ground and away from the storm surge. There will be a great deal of flooding along the coast from the storm surge. Twenty miles inland is somewhat safer for those who have to remain in the area for disaster assistance as your husband and other military members probably have to do. Everyone else needs to get at least 100-200 miles inland.

  3. Severa, the 20 miles inland is cool if it’s higher and the building is stronger. NAS Pensecola is right on the water so storm surge is the problem.  As Allan pointed it’s closer to get back and pick up the pieces.

Schools in Florida are built to some pretty ridgid standards. Most shelters in Florida are schools. Even the portable units used for overflow are Hurricane rated. Course a force 5 is an all bets off type of Hurricane.

For everybody else get as far away as you can and in the safest building you can. Do it soon too. Oh yea head inland, cause just as soon as you decide to ride it out with Uncle Gus in Galveston, Ivan will turn west for Galveston…

  4. I STILL think the upper mid-west gets cheated. I’d love for us to get SOMETHING besides thunderstorms and Gawd awful lake-effect snow. Our weather is soooo boring. rolleyes
Seriously though, Severa-my prayers are with your husband and everyone else in Ivan’s path.  Barb

  5. Barb- be thankful for the snow- it doesn’t blow your house away..........my former sister-in-law lost her entire house in Mississippi with Hurricane Camille ........I lived through hurricanes growing up on the southern coast of R.I., but nothing as devastating as what the southern states go through.........
