  1. I keep hearing about this story and it just makes me heartsick for those girls.  It does seem that it’s more than just Muslim men who think they’re worthless.  If upper class girls were the victim, I wonder if this would have been dealt with sooner and harsher.

  2. You may have a valid point but then again, the girls from a posh background might have raised a storm sooner and not seen themselves as deserving of bad treatment. And that’s open to debate I suppose considering the women who do belong to that group and still put up with abusive behavior from boyfriends and husbands. Unfortunately, this isn’t the only group of men from that culture(? can’t think of another word) who have played this game.
There isn’t one bit of defense for those poor excuses for men. But I think it must be said that today’s entertainment world and the images presented every day, not to mention the binge drinking falling down drunk young women who regard that behavior as nothing out of the ordinary, sends a very bad signal to many troubled young girls. Who eventually become the young mothers who raised them. I know I’m not putting it very well. There is hardly any real discipline in schools, parents are frightened of social services and the police should they smack a kid and I don’t mean beat up brutally. You’d also think that young girls might be a bit more aware, but I guess not. These girls didn’t seem to exercise any thought of self or self protection in the form of avoiding older men and going off in their taxis as tho it were a normal thing to do.

As an aside .... article a couple weeks ago.  A little girl maybe age 4, wandered outside her yard. Her mother later said she thought the gate was fully closed. So anyway, the kid wandered out onto the road and is happily walking down same and she wasn’t all that steady on her feet. Thankfully she was brought home safe and sound BUT .... it was also reported that a van had slowed and then drove away without stopping, as this was practically a baby wandering around and headed for a dangerous intersection or maybe it was a cliff face. I just don’t remember which. So, one fellow later came forward and said he saw her and thought of stopping but decided against it. His thinking being, oh boy. Man with a van stops to talk to a little girl? NO WAY. He was in such fear of being misunderstood if seen, he just thought in terms of self preservation.
Something those poor girls gave no thought to.
Can’t imagine what their home life must be like.

  3. I see your point about possible bad home life and other cultural factors contributing.  Posh girls may speak up sooner.  But do men like this have access to posh girls or at least as much as they have to girls from working-class families?  I’ve known survivors of assault and abuse from different backgrounds.  Humiliation and feeling trapped or unsafe played a big part in not getting help sooner.

As far as being aware, maybe they should be but as you say they probably don’t have a lot going on in the role model department.  But predators who practice grooming (instead of instant rape if you know what I mean) generally try to get on the good side of their victims first.  As a teen I didn’t understand the allure of drugs and alcohol but plenty of my peers were into it.  I still don’t get what young girls are thinking when they think it’s an alluring lifestyle.  I agree though that culturally we’ve declined to the point where our stranger danger antennae are practically nonexistent especially in the face of not wanting to appear non-PC.
