  1. Too me 99% of the commercials are offending, demeaning, stupid and promoting totally worthless crappola - so what?

  2. Well actually, I saw humor in this one. And it surely didn’t demean the women who were paid well. And it was done for the net. Not TV.
The so what part comes in because of all the many who viewed without protest, the company pulled it all due to one person.  And who but a lefty would use the reasoning used by the complaining party?  It all smacks of political correctness. And one person should not be able to have that much say about what others see when what they view is lawful. And I agree that most commercials are a crashing bore.

  3. I think everyone wants to be treated as a sex object, at least sometimes, at least by the person (people?) they want to be a sex object for.

That said, the last 40 years of effort have made almost everyone, young guys included, aware that people are more than that. Much more.

But that aspect still remains, from the accepted-as-normal frission between men and women to the vive le difference to the current hook-up culture. And let us not forget the fairly recent attitude that knowing exploitation and/or self-exploitation is a path to “grrl power”, which gives us the tens of millions of “self shot” pics out on Facebook, Tumblr, etc., the crossover of porn actresses and actors into mainstream film along with the acceptance of their professional legitimacy and so forth. Put bluntly, sex sells. And it always has. Because everyone likes it. And everyone is sexual to some extent.

Granted that there are over the top situations. But when a young actress, barely legal if not yet quite there, with a background of demanded innocence (Disney, Nickelodeon) texts full frontal naked pics of herself, and they go public, and her career only gets better ... let’s not forget all those “accidental” crotch shot “wardrobe malfunctions” that just “happen” to coincide with film premiers ... many of us are left wondering not just where the line is but if said line even exists any longer. So to cancel a commercial because it seems overly sexual seems a bit rash.

ALL THAT RANT being said, I watched the video. It’s a perfect British shot at the “degenerate French”, classic fun with an old old attitude. And the gorgeous dancing girls in their fancy undies ... are they strippers or what passes for can-can girls these days? ... were featured a bit much. The director could have just as easily had them come on, form a line, done a couple of high kicks, and run off ... and it would still be just as Fwench. But hey, why not push it good and hard, especially since the car itself IS from France? France, which churns billions yearly in tourist dollars keeping the “home of romance and passion. And culture!” meme going.

The “Buy this car, you’ll get laid” goes back at least 50 years. 12 seconds of editing and this ad will be right back on the telly. Meanwhile, they’ll get a popularity boost, free media coverage et al, from now having a “banned commercial”, a bit of negative-positive image support that has a lot of strength ... so much that Renault may have engineered the “complaint” themselves. Perfidious Fwench.

Brilliant!  Why didn’t I think of that? Ah. Maybe I’m not as cynical as I have begun to believe I are. Actually, they could have.  I’ve often heard or read that Howard Hughes was the one behind the censorship originally, of his own movie, The Outlaw, with busty Jane Russel, which spurred greater interest then the film deserved.
btw, I agree re. the girls in this video.  A traditional can-can in the costume of that period would have been even sexier.  (I liked the music used here and it’s familiar but I just can not name it or place it exactly.  I think I might have a close copy stored somewhere between here and Gallatin, TN.)

  5. Oh ... and having reread your post, followed the link, and watched the video again this time with the sound on ...

This is an internet only advert. The internet. Which mostly has NO standards or supervision. And which was brought to world-wide dominance primarily by pr0n. “Rule 5” etc. So get real. The “complaint” was nearly farcical. Renault is playing it just right. “Look, our new car is so naughty, so much forbidden fun, that even the advert got banned!” Perfect.

If they were really sharp, they’d have another ad for women. Not just beefcake, but a studied appeal to female sensuality and sexuality. Remember the Diet Coke ad with that guy “Lucky” from 20 years ago? Or what’s-his-hunk who was selling margarine? I’m certain they could do better. Press the VavaVoom button and it takes you to an entire world that’s a Dolce & Gabbana commercial. Renault Clio ... Live The Dream.

  6. Granted all you say. But even so.  Based on things that have happened in the past, it is not beyond total belief that one individual could have been responsible.
Although yes.  It is more likely that you read this better than I did. Seeing it that way, it does make sense.  btw ... What diet Coke commercial? Margarine?  I don’t recall those.

Gee, 20 years ago I was 20 years younger, and while still not exactly in my prime, I was doing okay. Commercials generally were zapped if we were watching TV. And if recorded, fast forward thru. The commercials that stayed with me were ...? Hey.  Radio and Stan Freeberg commercial.  “Cue the maraschino cherry” .... then he produced a one time Pepsi commercial. I think it was Pepsi. I recall the Pepsi radio spots when they first appeared cos it was a good jingle. Funny what I do remember.
