  2. Drew, I agree with you on most things. I’m with you 100% on the ignorant hypocritical BS re: gun control. I absolutely positively would LOVE to see a Fair Tax system replace the current 72,000+ page tax code that is riddled with special interest loopholes and exemptions/exceptions. Where we may not see eye to eye, however, is on the social issues.

Take gay marriage, for example (please...). I share the position of one of my favorite characters, Kinky Friedman, who once said “I support gay marriage. I believe they have a right to be as miserable as the rest of us.” I don’t care who does what to who (or is it whom?). I don’t think the government has any business telling us who we can or cannot marry, as long as each party is a consenting adult. Let the govt set the rules for civil unions, and the churches decide whose marriage they will or will not sanctify. Society won’t crumble and fall because of gay marriage.

As for marijuana, the war on drugs has been a miserable failure. We’ve spent billions - by some estimates over $1 TRILLION! - fighting a losing battle. Usage rates are up, hundreds of thousands (at least) of young people are in jail or have criminal records, gangs and cartels have gained immeasurable power, and it’s easier for kids to get pot, meth, or crack than it is for them to get liquor. I work several days of the week on the Texas-Mexico border and I see the futility of it every day. Yes, potheads and druggies tend to be a waste of oxygen. But so are hard-core alcoholics. IMO it’s prohibition all over again. We can’t stop it. Criminals are getting rich and powerful because of it. Legalizing it won’t turn us into a nation of addicts any more than repealing prohibition turned us into a nation of drunks.

    Just my $.02 worth. YMMV…

  4. CenTex, Yes, the battle on drugs has been a losing one. But I think that’s because the will to fight it has been lacking.  Well, maybe I shouldn’t say lack of will. The will among many has been there but, something is missing. I believe what is missing is the price paid by the bad guys.  Where the penalties are severe in some other countries, ie the death penalty, they don’t appear to have the same level of drug crime. But in the west especially, and in light of WW2, more and more Europe and the USA have enacted rights of the individual to a ridiculous extreme beyond all reason.  Which you’ll note in one of my posts later today. If however those rules were done away with, which of course would require the deletion of interfering groups such as the aclu, we might just be able to reduce by a large number, the ppl engaged in the drug traffic that has been responsible for so much damage over the years.  Unless these folks are eliminated by extreme measures, and that’s includes the user as well, look for things to get much worse. People learn to a great degree, by example. So set examples that will impress both the would be user and the pusher. Look what govts have done re. cigarettes. Part of it was education as well as the heavy hand (too heavy I believe since it is a legal product) of govt. This is a tough subject that goes round and round.
    As to the border problem.
If we were allowed to use the army with strict instructions to shoot dead every single invader regardless of age or sex, bingo. Problem solved in a day because with that kind of draconian response, how many would freely choose to risk violating our borders?
The europips would jump up and down and point a finger and call us names but big deal. They do that anyway.

  5. Sorry - take a look at history - when civilized societies start embracing such anti-family/cultural ideas such as homosexuality - it unravels and the ‘nation’ falls. It is simply more than freedom of choice. I would only be libertarian enough to say - what you do in your own damn home (as consenting adults) is ok with me - but when you move it off your private property, include children or attempt to re-write laws - Not No but HELL NO.

The same with drugs - Amsterdam that mecca of open-minded druggieness is about closing all their drug cafes - as it did nothing for what appeared to be the ‘results’ of restrictive drug laws - crime (theft) and prossies. Big f-in surprise. Take a look at Afghanistan to see how cultured and civilized a country that is ‘run’ by a religion and embraces ‘drugs’ as a financial enterprise.

There is a reason that a tight rein was wrought upon certain behaviors - study history and we all can live in a better world.

Not accepting the mindless drivel of liberals who simply want all the disgusting, illegal and immoral behaviors that they indulge in to become legal, to ease their guilty consciences.

  6. I’m glad to see a variety of opinions and some intelligent discourse. I wonder if one could be on the Right and for all the author’s issues? Meh, maybe not.

  7. Only two actual reasons Fags( oh, Im sorry,Gay folks) want legal marriage and that’s Tax Advantages of married folk and the ability to Adopt children. All the other crap is bullshit and noise.
Sure, it makes sense Pot is as bad a coke and smack because we all know from experience that if you take a toke you will have to mainline a few times just to prove your hip. And I sure want my septum to become one gaping hole from to much Coke so ya, All drugs are bad and all the same,,Bullshit! Look, Adults will do this shit and no law or scare tactics will change that for the minority who indulge but go right ahead and spend Billions showing them that toking is one step from mainlining and should be punished the same. Idiots.
Pot is a dumb substance but not a dangerous drug and pissing about it is only good for the guys who make a living enforcing and harassing the users. But go ahead and feel good about that you anal priss Carry Nation types. Pot=Alcohol in the ‘wanna gotta’ have it for pleasure department for many adults these days and that’s not going to change. One thing though, Drew is right that driving and using should always be punishable because an altered mind is a bad thing to use behind the wheel of a car/truck/plane.Stay at home(or Vegas) and get high or drunk, its the responsible thing to do.
Flat tax, no exemptions for kids, housing ,Nothing. Business taxes need to be somewhat stimulative but that’s not the same as you and me paying for the government we have.
An lastly, No one here will read this and give a shit because we are all self centered and think it’s Our Way or the Highway. That’s the American Way,,,,,,,

  8. Drew, I have to say that for the most part there is more intelligent discourse here than at many other nodes in the Inter-world.

As for gay marriage and legalized drugs, IMO one can oppose the notion but still support the freedom of people to choose. I’m not in favor of either, but homosexuality and drug usage have been around for thousands of years. Even the most stringent of societies (e.g., WardMoma’s Afghanistan - and WM, I’m not picking on you) have been unable to eliminate them.

IMO gay marriage and legalized drug usage are evolutionary dead ends. Let those folks indulge in what they want, don’t provide them with a social and financial support system (that is, treat them like the rest of us - including driving while impaired penalties) and sooner or later it will be a problem that solves itself.

We have bigger things to worry about than who sticks what body part into where, or who ingests what into their body…
