  1. I posted about the “brownie” thing on ALT yesterday-of course being ALT the $%^&# link didn’t work.
As for the Kiwi fisherman and their roughly 13 foot shark:
Being that they were at the mouth of a river-the likely suspect would be a bull-very likely is aggressive and likes fresh water-though 4 meters would be on the very upper end of its size range.
A small white-does sometimes hug shore-but no preference for fresh water.
A small tiger-likes brackish water(water where fresh and salt meet) quite aggressive.

Personally I think it was a smaller tiger or a larger bull trapped in the net-and I’m glad that the fisherman don’t have a shark shaped trophy now.
Sharks are FRIENDS-not trophies or food.

  2. Vilmar, thanks for the post.  Ruatoria is not that far from us as the crow flies, but it takes about 4 hours to get there (no interstates here).

ALT, sorry, but you are applying Northern Hemisphere standards to your analysis.  The water here is neither warm nor brackish like Fla. (where I grew up) where there are lots of Tigers and Bulls.  The predominant sharks here are Makos and Great Whites, and both are known to swim up estuaries, especially Whites.  It was a small boat as I seem to recall that the boat was around 14-16 ft as reported in the news here.  There are LOTS of Makos, and 13 ft is not uncommon down here (you should see the size of the lobster and crayfish down here...OMG!!! big surprise ) My better half, Apathy or freedom, ran charter boats out of Auckland for several years.  She has personally caught an 18 ft Mako.  She, also, does not believe in killing them, however, the Pacific Islanders (Fijians, Samoans, Tongans, etc.) cut out shark livers and eat them raw as a sign of respect for the shark. barf

  3. I lived in an area with lots of Jews.  Some people were complaining that the ‘goddam jews’ were trying to run the local school.

My response was, “Great! Let ‘em. They’ll do a hell of a job.”

  4. ILC-an EIGHTEEN foot Mako?!!!
    WOW!-my fav shark incidentally.

I’m part of the school of thought that doubts the idea that whites could go in fresh water.
    Bulls can-and do!

  5. ALT, estuaries are waters where ocean meets outlets of rivers (multiple here in some places) so stating it is fresh water is not entirely correct.  However, last year in an area called Dargaville a Great White was stranded in the estuary when the tide receded....and yes the Mako was that BIG, have pictures at other residence in Auckland.  When I go up there I shall email same to you...lol even have a video of my skipper shooting a shark that a group of charterers were attempting to gaff and bring aboard ....btw skipper only shot the shark as it was a huge mother and he feared the fools would get eaten LOL

  6. According to the Armored Vehicles special of Armada a few months back, the antimissile system for tanks is in development by something like five companies worldwide. The first time I heard of such a concept was in the 1979 book Hammer’s Slammers by David Drake, which describes the system pretty precisely.
