Personally, I recommend that the astute worker maintain his own private email and chat accounts that do not go through or involve corporate resources. That way the company can monitor the company communications to their hearts delight and the employee can still have private communication as applicable. You can do this by getting your own notebook computer and a cellular broadband account, or by getting a Blackberry or a Treo. This way, it isn’t their computer on their bandwidth—it is YOUR computer on YOUR bandwidth. Since it doesn’t go through their servers, they have nothing to monitor. Same thing about phones—I’m not saying not to carry & use the company cell phone (if provided) for business purposes, but also carry and use your own cell phone for private use.
Yes, this costs extra money, but it reliably squashes the personal privacy/company spying thing cold.
Good advice, gb_in_ga. I agree 100%. A Treo or Blackberry of your own solves the problem for everyone.
