I knew it!

Does eating a diet high in saturated fat clog your arteries?

  1. Don’t you tire of this sort of Nanny state advice? I’m reminded of a Mad Magazine couplet from the very early ‘70s. I remember it because I was a Boy Scout patrol leader and my patrol had to do the entertainment that week. Mad Magazine was our inspiration.

    “With all these dire warnings
    of pain, doom, and strife,
    It’s hard to imagine
    a fate worse than Life.”

Yes, everything I need to know I learned from Mad Magazine. “Africa is God’s Country, and He can have it.” And of course the Alfred E. Newman classic “What? Me Worry?”

Don’t worry, Be happy. (I should write a song...)

  2. I am for an all meat diet....plus from the “need to loose a couple pounds club” consume less calories…

  3. Sorry, the Masai don’t live very long, they do suffer from a host of diseases, and science has adequately proven that a diet high in red meat and milk products lead to much sickness and early death.  Think Florence Griffin Joyner’s death at 38 was merely breathing related?  Some think all the mucus from cow’s milk products she consumed contributed to her early death...eating red meat cooked at high temperatures will pre-dispose you to a number of cancers.  But you can find a study that claims anything (even liberals and Muslims) are good for you!  The nanny state sucks but why should good science be silenced as a knee-jerk reaction to suspicious big government?  Even the government gets a few things right!

  5. I was going to suggest the non-technical and high activity lifestyle of the Masai might have something to do with their leanness and lack of cholesterol and heart disease.

I could stand to walk several miles a day on a regular basis.

  6. Dr.Atkins vindicated again.

  7. Check out the Schwarzbein Principle diet. It is a way of life that you adapt and never change, I lost 40lbs eating bacon and eggs in the morning for about 6 months and have kept the weight off. The basic principle relys on a protein, vegatable, fruit and a lack of the things we love, too many to list. My blood test came back so perfect my Dr wanted to know why and was amazed when I told her what I ate.

  8. As gdonovan said, this sounds a lot like Atkins, perhaps even more severe.

I did the Atkins plan for 3 months a few years back and lost 60 pounds. I was getting plenty of excercise at the time, rebuilding the mother in law’s kitchen from the studs inward. I went off the diet and over the course of 3 years gained most of it back. I tried it again and lost 14 pounds in just over 2 weeks. But it’s a very hard regimine to stick to; the cravings for sweets and carbs DON’T “go away in time” as they say. No, I was ready to kill people for a Snickers bar or a bag of chips.

Now we are on a mostly organic food plan. We’ve cut out as many artificial ingredients as we can, and cut way back on soy oil and corn syrup which seems to be in everything. I haven’t gained or lost any weight and I can’t honestly say if I feel better or not. But I do think the “fat is bad” thing is overdone. Better to eliminate additives, white flour, and most sugars.

All the current TV diets use a similar method. “The secret is controlling the gylcemic index” is their line I think ... they sell you the food too. Too $$$ for me!

Eat organic meat and veg, cut almost all sugars and white flour out of your diet, and try to avoid soy and corn products. And get LOTS of excercise. You will shed the pounds right quick. I guess I’ll have to follow my own advice come the new year. Arrggh, Drew’s not gonna be a happy camper for a long time.

  9. I would say that maybe carbs are the issue - yeah you are getting the right kind but proportionally too much.  Decrease that volume increase the protein and poof....  The misses has lost 30+ pounds just by increasing activity and changing the diet plan to include portion control.

  10. I will chime in - it is the additives put into our highly processed ‘food’ that is what is killing us - our cradle to grave ‘shake’(formula, pedi-sure,slimfast,boost,ensure etc) mentality of garbage (what’s that phrase - garbage in, garbage out?!!?)masquerading as food. Most of what a majority of American’s eat - isn’t real food - it is additives, colors, flavors and preservatives.

You know what are the four predictors of a long (90+ years) of life?
    1. Loving, strong relationships
    2. A sense of humor
    3. Ability to cope and adapt
    4. A strong faith

Look - no diet or exercise mentioned at all. . .

The problem with comparing X group to Y group is the different cultures/society. America has much more stress and anxiety which is artificially created (much like the food). A lot of the push for exercise is that Americans don’t do physical things (such as walking to work, housework and yardwork - themselves, they get highpowered stress filled jobs to be able to pay people to do it for them).

To fix it we need to cut back in the garbage food - which is one reason I cheer the increasing natural, organic and local produce being touted in the supermarkets today - it is a start. I can remember never being able to find any flour other than white all purpose in my local grocery - now it is easy to get even out of the ordinary (spelt, for instance).

Having said all that I just finished a piece of Raspberry, White Chocolate Cheesecake (from The Cheesecake Factory) - and would not pass a Big Mac in my life. . .

It is all about moderation and control in all things! And accepting that we all die - sometime.
    ohh

  11. "Now understand, your humble host could stand to loose a few pounds”

Why do so many people spell the word lose L-O-O-S-E?  I’m not trying to denegrate the humble host in any way, trust me.  I’m just very curious as to why the word is often spelled that way.  Is it a regional thing, something taught in schools in certain parts of the country?  Can anyone answer that question, has anyone ever noticed that?
