2. Maybe if Blight hadn’t lived up to his own name and let his partner’s kid hide out at his place for a bit this never would have happened. Not saying he asked for it, or that he should countenance criminal behavior, but it seems a cowardly act.

   On the third hand, reading between the lines, it looks like Blight had an alternate plan for Nelson, and facilitated his going on the lamb by loaning him his camping gear. But when it was time to go, Nelson got wobbly.

   Blight’s “partner” here is his common-law wife. Nelson is Blight’s stepson. After Blight got whacked twice in the leg, the row continued out in the yard.

   The teenager was then bundled into the garden by a friend and his mother, still brandishing the axe as he shouted at Blight: ‘Get out here, I’m going to chop your head off, you baldy-headed b******.’

   According to his accepted basis of plea, Lord Judge said Blight then took up the knife, fearing that Mr Nelson would break back into the house though the patio windows, and went into the garden intending to scare him into giving up the axe and leaving.

   He tried to grab the axe, whereupon Mr Nelson swung it at him several times inflicting a cut to his elbow and several defensive cuts to his hands.

   So we’ve got Blight, injured, possibly outnumbered 3 to 1 (we don’t know about the mother and friend) arming himself with a kitchen knife against an axe wielding yob who has twice shown his willingness to use that weapon against him. Blight tries to disarm the kid and suffers several defensive wounds. Which means he was hit several times more, with an axe. It was only at that point that he made his riposte.

   My verdict? The British justice system is whacked. Blight should never have seen the inside of a jail cell, not even for an hour. Self defense, all the way. And this AG Scotland should be run out of town for pushing for his conviction.
