I think the problem here is that the US is only just waking up to what Britain has had to contend with for the past decade. Tony Bliar involved British troops in Iraq and Afghanistan but the clown who held the purse string (Brown) has always hated the military.
Britain has since 1945 had a National Health Service and much more generous welfare than the US for example. Labour as long as I have been around has always cut spending on the military in order to fund the client state. Ever since Suez the British military has diminished and spending has been cut to fund the increasing demands of welfare and the public sector. In the past decade the British army has been asked to do things for which it is ill equipped. They took ground in Afghanistan but then allowed the ragheads to take it back because they didn’t have the manpower to hold the ground. That and the Afghans basically can’t be trusted to do the job themselves. Now that the Bush strategy of the “surge” in Iraq has paid dividends we have a huge influx of US soldiers into Afghanistan and I believe that now the job will be carried through. A lot of UK soldiers have died because the troop carriers thay have used have been totally inadequate and there is a distinct lack of helicopter carrying capacity.
My personal view is we are too worried about collateral damage now. British papers constantly bleat whenever a “wedding” is hit by predator drones and the taliban are not stupid they know that the public in Britain and the US can easily be influenced by body bags and “civilian” casualties. Meanwhile farmers grow fields of opium poppies. Take a look at pictures of Berlin at the end of WW2 it was devestaion. People have to know that they are beaten. If this means spraaying fields of poppies with Roundup and the local farmers starving so be it. If it means that villages sheltering taliban are wiped of the map than that’s what has to be done. If we piss about and allow them to keep taking pot shots and piling up dead soldiers then all those poor bastards will have died in vain. If it was up to me the hundred odd thousand Afghan asylum seeking scum in Britain who all “fled the taliban” would be conscripted and shipped off to fight their own battles. Quite why fit 18 year old men are granted asylum in Britain while British born soldiers are blown up by these scumbags relatives is beyond me.
