I’ll never forget the Christmas I was a freshman in HS when a classmate of mine got in trouble for bringing a box of homemade bourbon balls to school and passed them around (well worth it though, they were GREAT!)
We had a chemistry teacher back in HS in the dark ages who every year had the tradition of the class on distillation of brandy.
Stdents in his class were invited to bring in fruit which he then mixed with sugar and yeast to ferment, class 1…
Then he would demonstrate how to strain off the fermented liquid and brave souls were allowed a sip, can’t say it was that bad, class 2…
Then the big day the distilling appartus set up, visiting dignitaries (principal, both vice principals and various assorted science teachers)in attendance, fire up the bunsen burner and we had hooch, brave souls allowed a sample (with parental permission of course), a little raw but mixed with soda not bad to 16-17 year olds, class 3 and the start of Christmas break…
Was great for moral, a local right of passage thing and a big draw to take a second year of chemistry…
Did I mention some of us made a killing at signing permission slips…
Ahhh, but those days are over in public education…
1: Baileys or Kahlua is also good in eggnog.
2:I walk everyday and go to the gym 3 times a week, which in turn has made me a size 6, which in turn allows me to bake-and EAT what I bake(and I’m a EXCELLENT baker)!
