Here’s A Local Story (And My Take On It)

  1. Yea the life style choices of some folks will drive you up the wall…

Busch Gardens doesn’t even do free beer anymore I’m told. Seven dogs at one residence? Isn’t that a code violation or a public health hazard?

But let me throw out another scenario, which may or may not be a factor in this case.

Renters insurance is a risky business. Here in Gainesville, Florida we have a lot of renters, what with UF and all.  You’d think that this would be renters heaven, NOT…

Only two local companies carry renters products and they have like three companies to choose from. That’s a starter…

They run around $2-300 for the first $5,000 of coverage with a $500 deductable and are depriciated original cost policys. Each additional $1000 runs about $100. In addition there are a lot things that require additional riders like computers and firearms. Oh and I forgot the building construction and age can be a factor in if you can get coverage at all.

When I had renters insurance (about 8 years ago) for a family of three it ran $485 a year(which we paid)and that would not have replaced all we had but would get us set back up.

Now it I pay $600 a year on a $125,000 home with replacement value on the contents and a $500 decutable in the same general area, and no special riders for my gear.

Maybe they couldn’t get renters insurance, maybe they never heard of renters insurance who knows.

I agree with you that if renters insurance was available their priorities are all wrong. but I know a lot folks who rent locally that just can’t get the coverage and would if they could.

Then I can’t blame the insurace folks either. I manage a few local rental units for some folks and I’m not sure I’d write a renters policy on some of my tenants…

  2. Vilmar, yeah you’re a cold, heartless bastard .... just like me. Just because they “might not” have known about insurance is no excuse. The trip to Busch Gardens would have paid for their policy for a year. Why should I donate money to help these morons? There are other more important folks I have to take care of first.

  3. "Only two local companies carry renters products”

You don’t *have* to go to a local office to get insurance. Call up one of the nationals. In all my life I’ve only ever been face to face with an insurance company person once and that was when he was evaluating collision damage on a truck.

  4. Well Jack The Gainesville Landlords Association has done just that cause frankly we’re tired of folks bothering us when they get ripped off or burn our places up…

Bottom line there are 3 companies who will write renters policy in the Gainesville area and they will reffer you to there Indepentant Agents of which only two carry the product. They only write a certain number of policies to qualified applicants each year.

The association even looked into the costs of adding tenants belongings to the owners policy and adjusting the rent acordingly. We found very few companies who would do that and it was very expensive.

Like I said I can’t blame the inurance guys either, nor do I think John Q Public should pick up the tab uninsured folks. Nor do I feel obligated to pony up charity for every hard luck story.

It sounds like this family would be better off buying a place even if it’s a mobile home, what with 7 dogs and all. Then there mortgage company would make sure they had insurance and paid propert taxes.

My point is, bottom line the on the paper solutions don’t always exist…

  5. Ric:

Dang. That’s truly a fucked up situation. It still boggles my mind that only three companies will write the policies. Guess I’ve been lucky in that my insurance will pretty much write me a policy wherever....

  6. Might be inclined to help clothe the kids after first administering a good whipping to daddy and mommy.  They should have eaten the fucking pets, all the petfood in stock and add the savings from that to the Busch fund to buy some insurance.

Sexual intellectuals (that’s “fucking idiots” to red staters, Pelosi) shouldn’t be allowed to vote or breed.

    Was that too harsh Vilmar?

  7. Dick, not at all.  I am never ceased to be amazed at the number of people in this country who do not have their priorities straight.

I’ll go you one better: let them attempt to breed...but sterilize them first to guarantee no issue.
