I remember reading a first-hand account of a battle in WW2, in which an American artillery forward observer was in sight his German counterpart. Our artillery started to come close to a German field ambulance collecting their wounded; the American frantically phoned for them to cease firing.
Then he gave a gesture to the German saying, “Sorry, Man, it was a mistake!” The German’s attitude changed from outrage to, “It’s OK, Dude, I understand”. Then they went back to trying to kill each other.
Those were the Good Old Days.
