My best guess is to check his browser preferences and make sure Javascript is turned on. Leave Java turned off. It’s still a security risk. You’re open to all kinds of malware. Java is unnecessary on BMEWS. Javascript is.
Also, if he’s using a Mac I’d like to know what OS he’s running. He says they don’t have a Firefox browser for his computer. I use Firefox almost exclusively. He doesn’t mention Safari at all and that comes standard on all Macs. If he doesn’t have Safari it’s a free download at the Apple website.
I use mac and it works fine with Safari, no issues here
I have seen older versions of OSX have issues with java and other stuff.
My guess is similar to Christopher’s. If Firefox, Safari, or Chrome/Chromium aren’t available, the computer and the version of Mac OS must be positively ancient. I’m thinking either the very first couple of versions of Mac OS X (10.0, 10.1, maybe 10.2), or even older (Mac OS 9.x or even older). If it’s OS 9.x or earlier, that honestly should not even be used on the internet due to the ease of exploiting security holes etc. Chrome says it works from OS X 10.6 or later. Firefox is probably similar, and I’m pretty sure that some version of Safari was included with the original OS X version, 10.0.
According to iCab’s website, version 3.x should work for Mac OS 9 or later, to OS X 10.3.9, but 2.9.9 works for Mac OS 7.5 through 9.2.2. This tells me that the Mac is very old, possibly a first-generation iMac, running no later than Mac OS 9.2.2, or even a pre-iMac PowerMac running 8.5 or later. There are 2 options at this point: bite the bullet and run iCab 3.0.5, or bite the artillery round and buy a modern Mac. Honestly, I’m surprised the machine even works; it should be at least 15 years old.
Red Five, until ‘06 I was running my iMac SE 700 with OS 9 and had no problems with Firefox. I was still an admin on BMEWS too. He must have something really ancient. Last time I heard of iCab was back in the ‘90s.
By doing some testing in my own environment (Windows/Firefox v23.0/NoScript v2.6.7) I confirmed this is indeed a JavaScript issue. If JavaScript is not allowed for barking-moonbat.com, clicking on a “more” link will result in a 404.
I don’t use Apple equipment or software, so what I’ve found below is purely based on some search-fu and information at the icab.de site (the browser software the user mentioned.)
In iCab, there should be a preference dialog, and javascript settings should be in that (probably in the ‘Web Content’ frame.) Check those.
Also, look at the Filter Manager, and note the caution about iCab 2/3’s filters being different from iCab 4’s. You might need to set up a filter to allow javascript for barking-moonbat.com.
If its really old (pre iMac) then other world computing might be able to help, if it is a crt iMac then they will run OSX BUT do a firmware update or you loose the video! I made good money from people not reading that error message! does netscape navigator still exist?? ow my memory hurts! (remember when a 64k memory chip cost the earth?)
