  1. My guess is that you’ve never seen whales in the open sea.

The whales put my little warship to shame. They are huge!

To see them flying through the air and crashing back into the ocean was a treat.

Flying? Okay, very rare, but up off the Alaska coast the whales seemed to like an audience. They would get up speed underwater and then ‘fly’. Up and back down. Tails made an impressive splash.

The only other cetaceans that would do that were the dolphins. They followed us constantly. We started naming them…

  2. Actually, I have. A couple of those whale watch tour things. Humpbacks though, not sperms.
Never seen one breach, never seen one sailing. Or tailing, or whatever they call it.

    My life is nearly complete:

I have seen the whale in the open sea, and touched him as he swam by (and their breath is awful, like rotting cabbage).

I have heard the loons calling in the fog of dawn.

I have seen the eagles circle and dive.

I’d add something about the cry of the wolf, but I slept through that when we were camping up in Maine. The bugger left footprints around our camp nearly the size of a baseball mitt though. Scared the crap out of my parents. And their little dog!

Bears I’ve dealt with. No majesty there, they just suck. Pains in the tail. And they smell pretty bad too.

There ought to be a few more poetic natural experiences of wonder to add to that list, but that’s all I can think of offhand. Watched elk or moose do the mating fight thing, and bugle in the wilderness? Not me, not yet. That would be so cool too, but it would need to be expressed with beauty. “Heard the love call of the mighty elk, and watched them battle for lady fair” or some such. Most of the time, the only noise deer make is a little bleating that sounds a lot like passing gas. No thrill there either.

  3. So those whale-things in Star Trek IV destroying the Earth with their calls were just SNORING????

  4. Cute Tim. Good one.

I think one of the linked articles said that the whales made no calls at all during this.

Besides ... think it through, using the buoyancy tanks of a submarine as your model ... wouldn’t a snoring whale sink? LOL

  5. When I was a teen-ager, part of me quite often slept vertically, too!

*Sorry, but it had to be said.*
