Christmas in Vietnam, no internet, no cellfones. It was a cold, bleak time made harder by memories. We named our patrols Prancer, Dancer, Donner, etc. Do remember these men & women.
I remember my 2nd Thanksgiving meal after joining up at a USAF base (stateside). An officer with his family was standing in line ahead of me. His wife did nothing but complain. The line was too long. The line was too slow. The chow hall wasn’t attractive enough for her tastes. Yada yada yada. Nearly told the cow to stfu. She should have been thankful for her family to be together. As it was the meal was great. The chow hall personnel out did themselves. Unfortunately, they also managed to blow their budget for the next few weeks. We had some very strange menus until they managed to get back on track with their budget.
To those who are close to military bases you might consider “adopting” a GI for any of the holidays and have him/her over to share dinner with you. It sure got lonely for many who were away from home. You will be appreciated by those who get treated to a home cooked meal and company. Contact the base and they will match you up with GIs.
