Gas Prices Spike Again

For more on cellulosic ethanol here, and on the RFS mandate and stupid corn ethanol, look here.

  1. Gotta admit I’m starting to bike more often. I even bought a ‘camelback’ yesterday. If you don’t know what that is, look it up.

  2. Just don’t put any beer in your “camelback” Chris, or you’ll be done for D.W.I.

  3. No Yankee. I dislike beer. I don’t know why anyone likes beer, it tastes like piss. It’ll be water in my camelback. But you raise an interesting point: can you get hit for DWI on a bicycle? I don’t know. I’ve never heard of such.

  4. Depends how drunk you are Chris.

In the U.S. State laws differ, but in NJ I believe you have to be in charge of a “motor-driven” device.

However, they can always get for for a “Drunk & Disorderly”.

  5. Here (southwest OH) we had a guy get a DUI on his lawn mower - course he was weaving down the middle of the street at 1AM.

We just don’t go anymore - except to buy groceries and the (sadly) very occasional job interview.

Our price was $3.72 (where I go, most were $3.77+) the last time I filled, will need to fill up both soon. Oh well.

I paid $4.00/gal in 1980s in Germany (the few times I got caught needing gas away from an AAFES station) - and like that much per pack of cigs. Came home to under a buck for gas and a mere $3.00 for a cartoon of cigs. But their booze and beer are cheaper and better.

And these idiots here want to add in a fair tax - we will be pushing the 75% tax bracket when you add up all the taxes, both state and federal.

Since when is following another system into vapid stupidity anything other than the hallmark of inexperienced children or teenage rebellion? Shouldn’t our government be run by better people?

  6. It’s true. Ethanol as fuel is lousy, has lower energy per volume and weight (however you wish to do your measuring) and can damage car parts due to its hydroscopic effects. That is, the affinity for water. Which is why it’s good for making booze and all manner of mixed drinks, not so good for liquid fuel. Yes, it can burn. But however demonized gasoline is, it’s a pretty damned good source of compact fuel compared to booze.

The ones benefiting here, are, like the whole soybean bruhaha (though synthetic deisel is somewhat more efficient) are the farmers. But as Patrick Michaels said, we’re idiotic to be the first civilization in history that burns a large part of its own food supply and sending the prices up for everything made from soy and corn. And that’s a hell of a lot. In fact, the land area taken up by this scam actually means means other crops are not produced, and worse, even for the Greenies, it’s not “carbon neutral” once you factor in the labor and machinery needed to harvest. The best thing to do with corn is eat it.

Something has to give, both in this regard, and the fact the Prez has made sure that his only answer so far is to drive electric toy cars that still have to plug into the Grid (coal powered Prius, in other words), shutting down domestic coal productions and further drilling, and thus we continue to bow to the (literal) jewel-encrusted thrones of the House of Saud.

    Amazing.

  7. We filled our car up a couple of weeks back and it cost £62 ($100) it still had maybe 1/4 tank left. So I would say your calculations are pretty accurate. You have to understand Drew that having welfare for the dregs of humanity and free healthcare for anyone who wants it doesn’t come cheap. The real crippler though is that over 50% of the cars on the road are now diesel and this costs even more than gas. The improved mileage (our old VW would get around 47-48mpg imperial) is not such a benefit when it costs 6-7p per litre more than unleaded.

BTW we are also having to accept ethanol in petrol as part of our euroweenie mandated renewable nonsense.
