  1. Skip, humanity is a pyramid, it has always been a pyramid, and nobody ever went broke aiming for the lowest tier.

    wink

  2. OMG, buttboy cowboys, John Wayne must be doing 50,000 RPM.

    wtf

  3. Have y’all been following Mallard Fillmore in the comix? Mallard’s liberal editor found the film distasteful and now fears that he is homophobic.  He is comforted by the realization that two hot babes making out would’t have bothered him at all.

  4. "Mamas, don’t let your children grow up to be gay cowboys....”

Oink, I have always had a problem with that word homophobic.  The whole purpose of “homophobic” is to imply that I either like and/or tolerate homosexuality or I am afraid of it.  I neither like it nor am I afraid of it.  Just another PC word that has been created to force that lifestyle on those of us who would rather see it go away.

  6. This is your site you can say what you want, but honestly? Fudgepack Mountain?  What is it about gays that freaks you out man?  Because you honestly have a real problem here.

  7. OCM has the right approach. It’s a question of choice. I haven’t been to the “pictures” for quite a while now as most Hollywood films nowadays are mindless dross. I won’t be going to see this film because (sorry if this offends you Karen) the idea of men kissing etc. I personally find offensive and I sure as hell won’t pay money to watch it.

At the end of the day the accountants will decide whether or not films like this are made. My gut feeling is we won’t see many more films of this ilk when it bombs at the box office. It’s an arthouse film and that’s where it belongs.

  8. You all must read (gay) Andrew Sullivan’s “What’s So Bad About Hate?”

    http://www.andrewsullivan.com/print.php?artnum=19990926

John: “Homophobia” is an example of rhetorical overkill.  If you tag everyone with that label, what’s left to call the guy who wants to kill all fags? READ ANDREW SULLIVAN!!  Paraphrase—Conservatives who oppose gay equality but delight in their gay friends vs. liberals who look at their shoes when they talk to him. Read it!

  9. It’s interesting that “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” is still number 4 this week and has a total gross of $263,441,000!  Which is $58.7 Million more then King Kong!  While “Brokeback Mountain” is ranked 9th this week and has a total gross of only $32,088,000 with “Cheaper by the Dozen 2” making more money!
    http://movies.go.com/boxoffice

Can’t wait till Narnia goes to DVD so we can see those numbers!  For those who don’t know, Narnia is written by C.S. Lewis who was a good buddy of J.R. Tolkien.  The whole of the Narnia series follows a strong Christian theme.  So much so that the local Christian radio station runs an old fashioned style radio show on Saturday mornings that is effectively, the books adapted to radio.  Yeah, it’s a story meant for kids, so was “The Hobbit”.  The “Chronicles of Narnia” books have sold more than 95 million copies worldwide since the first book was published in 1950.

The Narnia movie is in touch with “America”.  I say don’t worry about “Hollywood” they will self-correct themselves soon enough.  If they keep this up for much longer they will effectively kill themselves financially.

Nobody really cares about any of the Hollywood award shows, we all know it’s fixed, has little to do with viewer-ship, ratings, or sales and all to do with the Hollywood elite slapping each other on the back!  Lately, it’s been about politics.

  10. P.S. to karen et al.—I support human rights. Gays are human. Ergo, I support gay rights. I’m irritated at having an agenda monotonously foisted on me. Reasonable gays predict that ‘gay culture’ will disappear and gays will be assimilated into the everyday American culture. Sounds about right.

It was horrible to bring up gay marriage this early in the argument.  It would be like starting out the black civil rights movement with inter-racial marriage in Mississippi in 1958. The fuggin’ racists were correct—integration will increase inter-marriage.  Miscegenation rules in my family. loveyou

  11. Despite the fact that I’ve heard that BBM is actually a good movie, and not gay propagande, and despite the fact that it was directed by Ang Lee, all of whose flicks that I’ve seen I’ve enjoyed, I just can’t see myself going to see this one, or even renting it afterward. It is just so far away from anything I’d be remotely interested in. Usually in cowboy movies, the guy loving his horse is about as weird as it gets. And there’s always a tough woman with a heart of gold who sets him straight, so to speak…

Posted by marty    United States   01/17/2006  at  11:44 AM

  12. Marty: You’re seriously disturbed. (IF you enjoyed “The Incredible Hulk”, that is.)

Posted by Oink    United States   01/17/2006  at  12:11 PM

  13. I agree that Hollywood is trying to force feed a lot of the drivel they crank out, and no I don’t want to see two men kissing or having sex.  I objected the title of this post, that’s all.  I thought it was offensive.  Fudgepack Mtn, Butthole Mountain, Ream my ass Mountain, Pillow cruncher mountain.  Jesus, both of my kids are gay, guess I was just too sensitive, it just pissed me off that’s all.  I am very conservative, but on this issue I am not.  I want my kids to be able to marry, I want them to live a good life.  Is that wrong?  Sorry again, I just get so sick and tired of these stupid fucking titles that people put on their websites when posting about this movie.

Posted by karen    United States   01/17/2006  at  12:52 PM

  14. Mr.Xian:  Me too.  My 5y/o son and I liked it, altho Mom disapproved when the kid imitated The Hulk.  The TV show had some lighthearted moments, like when Hulk destroyed an ATM machine. That’s a fantasy many have had.  The movie had more bathos than “The Romance of Helen Trent” & “One Man’s Family” combined.

Anyone recall those old radio soap operas? Without Googling, why the word “soap”?

Posted by Oink    United States   01/17/2006  at  12:59 PM

  15. Oink: (#17) Hulk, that’s one of Lee’s that I haven’t seen. Eat Drink Man Woman is good. Crouching Tiger is different, a little much with the flying and all, but pretty good anyway.

Posted by marty    United States   01/17/2006  at  01:52 PM

  16. Oink, the term “soap opera” comes from the days when the sponsers of such shows, radio or TV, were almost exclusively manufacturers of household aids, primarily soaps and detergents.  It was a natural arrangement, for housewives, who always needed soaps and detergents, were by far the largest audience of such shows.

Without Googling.  I simply happen to remember.

    wink

Posted by Tannenberg    United States   01/17/2006  at  02:50 PM

  17. Beg pardon, “sponsors.” Typo.  Sorry about that, chaps.

    wink

Posted by Tannenberg    United States   01/17/2006  at  02:51 PM

  18. Tann: Typo or no, you’re rite! And the dreadful organ music which perplexed me as a young kid.

Marty: My kids gave me a big wave-off, so I waited til it was on HBO. The angst-ridden Banner.

Posted by Oink    United States   01/17/2006  at  04:10 PM

  19. Yes, Oink, the organ music was usually dreadful, but these were typically not high-budget productions, and one musician cost much less than a studio full of them.  And as I recall, the Hammond was in the midst of vogue at the time, and so on into the 1960’s.

    wink

Posted by Tannenberg    United States   01/17/2006  at  05:10 PM

  20. Tann: a Sea Story—or Flashback, if you wish.

In Fort Wayne, Indiana, there was this plush old whore of a movie theater, with a huge velvet curtain, velvet seats, all the rococo ever made.  In 1969 my wife and I went to see (ready for this?) Easy Rider there.

Most of the audience was stoned.  Just before the move, this huge organ rises up from the basement, flashy colors and lights, playing “Lady of Spain” or Bach’s “Toccata and Fugue”, or maybe both. Then we were treated to a preview of Disney’s, “The Love Bug”.

By that time those who had not fled the theater were all prepped and ready for bad craziness.

  21. Well, I just got off the phone with a real cowboy from South Dakota, and although he’s pretty laid back he tells me that a few of the boys are trying to calculate how much beer and gas it would take to drive out to Hollywood and straighten a few of these movie SOB’s out.  The final tally isn’t in just yet, but I’m hoping that I can afford to go along for the ride.

Posted by Mad Jack    United States   01/17/2006  at  06:07 PM

  22. Karen: Settle down and chill out. You’re being way too sensitive here. If you read this blog regularly you know I play with post titles all the time. I make puns on old rock tunes, movie titles, etc. It’s part of the humor and satire I try to interject into otherwise deeply serious subjects.

As some have already pointed out to you, my complaint was with Hollywood, not homosexuals and I sure as hell didn’t make any attacks on any homosexuals personally. Either your children or anybody else’s children.

For Hollywood to make a movie about homosexual cowboys is as revolting to me as them making a movie about a Muslim pig farmer. Some things just don’t go together in most people’s minds and I question Hollylwood’s motives in investing so much publicity in a picture that so far is losing money. Yet winning awards voted on by Hollywood assholes.

Finally, would it have made you any happier if I had titled the post “Flaming Saddles”? It’s called satire, hon. Nothing personal intended. There is nothing in this world that can’t be laughed at or made fun of. In fact the more we do that, the fewer pretentious assholes we all have to put up with.

In closing, let me add that your children are not “gay” (unless they’re real happy and fun-loving). If they’re homosexual, say so. Face it down. Call it what it is. You (and they) will be better for it.

I’ll shut up now. Thanks for listening. And feel free to voice your opinion anytime. At this blog we all have opinions. And opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one. Especially fudgepackers. (that’s a joke)

    LOL

  23. I agree with OCM #7 and # 16 - if the movie content is offensive to you, just don’t go to the F****** movie!!!!!! Simple as that!!  Being hearing impaired, I rarely go to movies & I haven’t seen anything promoted that I would even attempt to go to lately........I occasionally watch movies at home because I can turn up the volume - even then I just can’t justify sitting for 2-3 hours to watch the idiot movies Hollywood puts out!!!!!!!
