  1. Another 200,000 Britons who want to fly back into the country are now thought to be stranded. Those in far-flung destinations have been told they may not be able to return for nine days.

Although some Scottish airports briefly began operating again on Friday night, experts said the travel misery could last a fortnight.

Yup, looks like you’re stuck. Unless you take the train to Gibraltar and then head west from Morocco on a flying carpet.  Get on line for that ... I hear that tickets are sold out for every train seat for the next 2 weeks.

  2. Ah Peiper I am so sorry - I just have to wonder (out loud and to my friends) exactly why is this volcano cloud causing so much harm - did a zillion planes go down when MT St Helens spewed and we were not informed - so this is the over-reaction or is the volcano spew from Mt Eyjafjallajökull some special soot that is uber dangerous?

  3. It’s sure getting to feel that way.  Wish I’d thought of it first.

  4. Wardmom,
Yeah. This one is bigger and at first I didn’t think about it much cos I hadn’t realized the winds would come this way. Well anyway, they did.  The media being as they are, I first thought that they were using the old press standby, If It Bleeds, It Leads.
But it has turned out to be real enough. So we wait. Not much choice.

Drew and Grumpy in another comment section covered it well.

    GRUMPY OLD FART said:

You can’t see the acid gases that are part of the fallout.

Nor can you see the very lightest of the ash cloud in faint concentrations, but it’s there. Microscopic bits of obsidian froth.

Sheesh, and they say smoking is bad for ya.

    and DREW had this:

Hydrogen Sulfide is a product of volcanic gas. That old rotten egg smelling stuff. However, in stronger concentrations is is highly flammable and acutely poisonous. And not a mask on the market will protect you for more than 20 minutes. That’s why every last filter cartridge for it is rated “escape only”.

OCM is also right about the glass. Or glass particles as they are being referred to on radio news.  I never heard about that before this eruption. Mother nature at work.
