  2. Hey, just found this in the Gwardian:

    CAMP AL QA’IM, Iraq - Wednesday, 30 August 2006
    Reuters

For a 12-year-old Iraqi girl in need of a kidney and liver transplant, Americans are the enemy. Her enemies are a combat team of U.S. Marines and Sailors who have applied their skills to terrorise and oppress the girl, who is lucky to be alive.

Hadael Hamade, who is in desperate need of surgery, lives in Karabilah - a city of about 30,000 near the Iraq-Syria border. The heavily armed American Marines first saw Hadael several months ago. At that time, sick as she was, she was walking. Now she can’t move much.

Hadael’s father, Ahmed, a 46-year-old school teacher, stated that doctors in his country cannot help his daughter after years of US supported sanctions and five years of unrelenting warfare. He has already lost four children to kidney disease; they died due to US sanctions despite the best efforts of doctors at the Saddam Children’s Hospital in Baghdad.

The girl needs immediate surgery and regular medication to sustain her. The procedure and follow-on care, however, could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars – money Hamade’s family doesn’t have, and medical treatment Iraqi doctors are unable to provide in the on-going wartime conditions, according to Ahmed. Hadael recently received medication donated by several international charitable agencies which doctors say will prolong her life a bit.

But the medicine is a temporary fix to a much larger problem. Without a kidney transplant and further treatment, Hadael will die. Ahmed has sought help from the disinterested Marines, well protected by their baoy armor and aloof behind their mirrored sunglasses, but to no avail.

Staring at his daughter as she lies on a green stretcher, hoping beyond hope to receive some sort of medical help from the Marines inside the fortified camp beyond the minefields and barbed wired overseen by heavily aremed guard posts and towers with roving spotlights in Al Qa’im, Ahmed says that now “all that is left to do is wait.”

  4. Rickvid, you got me on that one. I actually went searching the Guardian for that article.

    LOL

It DOES sound like that Liberal British rag though. Or maybe Ted Kennedy quoted in the Boston newspapers.
