Fox and Fred

Is Fox against Fred?

  1. I think there’s some merit to the charge.

All along, all the ‘conservative pundits’ - not exclusively Fox News - have been pushing Mayor Rudy Giuliani or Governor Mitt Romney, in that order.  No one else has a ‘chance’ for the nomination or to beat Senator Clinton.

At a casual glance, George Soros is the Democrat power behind the throne.  It seems Mr. Soros has taken the mantle of the late Richard Daley of Chicago and it seems equally obvious Mr. Soros wants Senator Clinton as the Democrat standard bearer in the next election.

What is not as obvious is who is the Republican ‘power’.  I tend to think it is not a single person, but more of a casual oligarchy.  Regardless of those facts, I find it clear the message of ‘Giuliani or Romney’ (always in that order) is trumpeted loud and clear to all Republican - conservative factions.  That unmistakable message feeds my belief there is an issuer of the message.

I have a good conservative Republican friend who sets great store by ‘executive experience’; that is, a background of executive power, such as a mayorality or governorship.  Whereas I think there’s some value in that theory, I still think issues are more important than background.  As I see it, the main issues for conservatives are:

Global war on terror and the threat of Islamofascism. All the candidates except Ron Paul agree on this; they’re all against it.

Family values. Pretty much a standard agreement, except for Mayor Guiliani who is questionable on abortion and homosexual marraige.  Others range from very strong to essential agreement.

Constituional integrity. To me, this is one of the most important considerations for any elected official.  The questions of personal rights - like gun ownership and taxation and freedom to decide one’s own path in life - is getting little view in the public eye.  Frankly, as long as gun ownership is free and universal (more or less) the other problems will not be significant.

I find Senator Thompson agrees more closely with my views on how government should be run and issues than anyone else.

I don’t think Fox News has a specific bias, other than to follow along the mantra of ‘only Rudy or Mitt can win’.  A mantra suspiciously popular at the moment.

I’m still going to support Fred Thompson until the convention is over.  I’m still not sure if I can support Rudy Giuliani at all.

  2. Archie, as far as I can tell, Fox has been pushing Rudy since the beginning. The only TV pundit I’ve seen so far who seems to actually be doing a “fair and balanced” job is CNN’s Glenn Beck. He’s the only Conservative on that network, and the only reason to watch CNN. You can find his interviews with the candidates out on YouTube, and maybe at glennbeck.com. I don’t think he’s had them all on yet, but he’s trying I’m sure.
