  1. Love the animation on that game but it moved so fast I had a hard time.

You must have clicked on the middle * button. It will automatically play the game. Just hit the > and it will advance one move until you hit > again. Hitting < takes you back a move. >| takes you to the ending position. |< takes you to the beginning position. You can also click on any move listed and the diagram will go to that position.

  2. To each there own. Chess just doesn’t have much of a fun quotient to me. The games are often slow, glacially slow, and just as often played under some oppressive aura of silence. Where’s the fun in that? Serious addicts are often even more unbearable than wine snobs.

I’ll leave it there, but in general my impression is that chess is something for frail little old eastern european men who live on onion soup and no longer know what soap is.

Sure, Chris’s situations are interesting, because they are short and sharp: find a solution using this particular methodology (fork, overload, etc) in as few moves as possible, usually removing random action completely from the action. The 84 moves and 3 hours of silence and bad breath that got the game to that point aren’t necessary.

  3. Drew, try visiting a chess club once. I think you will find that your ideas of chess playing are out of date. Here’s a list of clubs that might be near you.

Let me know what you think after visiting a couple of them.

  4. Drew,
In tournament chess you only have two minutes I think, to make a move. There’s a clock.

And btw .... I need to correct something I said re. wife and IBM. She corrected me.
She quit the club, not IBM itself.

We were never serious “addicts” but then the game just sometimes gets so darn involved.
Not trying to change your mind on chess but it is a game of some concentration so who wants background noise. Funny thing though about the times. I never played tournament and wouldn’t try if qualified. I couldn’t play against a clock. Never. Tried it once and that’s all it took. But when playing, I never noticed the time go by. But I can say for sure that we never played a three hour game. I wouldn’t have the patience for that.
I also didn’t have patience for anyone taking forever to make up their mind about a move.

I used to think of my rooks as Panzers which I suppose really is over the top.
