I’d still do her!
Amazing. Even Cher had to tell the truth about Gypsies.
What, that they liked to frak?
Some years back the satirical British comic Viz got into a lot of trouble when they ran a comic strip called “The thieving gypsy bastards” apparently the Roma folk didn’t find it amusing… they subsequently changed the strip to “The Nice, Honest Gypsies” after complaints from The United Nations.
Lyndon… The UN? OK, I won’t say anymore. Those letters are a red flag. Like the aclu and a few others.
When ya think about it though, saying those thieving gypsy bastards does seem a bit hard for a comic strip. I’m not being pc here but, for example, the guy who is currently in the news for the 50 BILLION dollar ponzi scheme happens to be Jewish. What if someone started a strip and called it embezzling Jewish Bastards.
I can see where that might be hurtful to many.
Of course, as a group the gypsy thing is closer to the truth which always hurts anyway.
Chris ,,me? Judgmental? ah ... guilty as charged.
Off topic for a sec.
It’s expected to be “brutally cold” tonight. (not my words)
No central heat in this ancient place, electric heaters and something called storage heaters. So ... question time.
There’s a cistern in the upper attic, not accessible to me so I have no idea if it’s insulated or not but most likely not. House dates from early 20s.
Is it a good idea to leave any water running over night on a trickle?
It may appear odd to BMEWSers to see that question, but I never lived somewhere in time before. Last winter wasn’t too bad but we are getting Arctic winds and boy is that frigid. Actually, the winds do come from there normally anyway, and also from Siberia. But it hasn’t been this cold in the last four yrs I’ve been here. So I just wondered.
Peiper those storage heaters are ok if you have “economy 7” or whatever. They basically heat concrete blocks at night on cheap rate (if there is such a thing in the UK now) electricity and it in theory heats the house during the day. I think they are rubbish but you don’t have much choice. I take it the cistern provides pressure for the hot water tank? I expect this is heated by an “immersion heater” again this is expensive unless you have it switched to heat from 11pm to 7am. Usually when they put fibre glass insulation in the attic they will leave a space under the cistern so that it wont freeze and hopefully the feed pipe will be insulated. Leaving a tap running is probably not a good idea for two reason. One it will drain your hot water and two it wears out the valve seats. You may be eligible for a grant to get your loft insulation improved. One of Brown’s claims is he is going to create 100,000 “green” jobs which includes hiring people to put in insulation.
You may also be eligible for a grant towards central heating. It’s worth going along to a “citizens advice” ofice and see what they recommend.
Re the Viz comic. Well I agree it was in poor taste, but it was funny.
Hi Lyndon and thanks.
I should have made clear, wife was told by someone to leave the cold water tap on to a slow trickle over night so things would not freeze in the pipes. ??
I never was faced with that sort of problem and I once lived in New England with tons of ice and snow.
Right, the cistern stores the water for hot water. I forgot . Wouldn’t want to run that all night. But what about the cold?
To be honest I doubt it will get cold enough to freeze the cold water. I assume you are talking about the kitchen sink tap? Normally the shut off valve for the house supply is located under the kitchen sink. From there it usually runs underground to the main. External pipes may freeze but your house would have to be pretty damn cold for an internal pipe to freeze. Though leaving a tap running can help in such a situation, but it would have to be pretty extreme for a heated house. I read it will get cold this week in the UK but we are talking relative cold. Maybe -5c in your part of the South and most likely warming up to above freezing during the day. Also is your water metered? If you are worried you can leave it dribbling but I doubt you need too.
