  1. Wow, do I get to tell any more fish stories?

Posted by Steel Turman    United States   12/16/2004  at  05:10 PM

  2. As many as you want.

Posted by Vilmar    United States   12/16/2004  at  05:44 PM

  3. ~Oh the shark kills with its teeth babe..and it keeps them pearly white..~~

I won’t get that song out of my head for the rest of the night.

I would have a tad more sympathy for the kids but for the fact there *have* been a rash of attacks of late down there.  In fact fox news just ran a film clip of a great white from those very waters.  And it is (the ocean) the sharks natural habitat after all.  Perhaps it would be more prudent to stay (much) closer to shore until the sharks move on to other waters in which to feed...or the locals take to thinning the Great White shark herd (school?) out a bit.

  4. What a sad story...........so, Barb, do you still love sharks??

Posted by Dottie    United States   12/16/2004  at  09:02 PM

  5. Okay, the boss said I could and so I will.

I spent a long time on Guam. Not as bad as
    you might think.

Pretty cool place really. Half atoll and
    half volcanic.

And one end of the island went out to sea
with a coral reef as barrier and the other
half went to the Marianas Trench.

    STRAIGHT DOWN.

Now it is a bother getting rid of garbage
on an island. And Guam is no exception.

Soooo, I had occasion to be in a job where
    my duties included collecting ‘vectors’.

A vector in this case was a problem such
as mosquitoes or rats and we would trap
them and see if they were a hazzard to
    humans.

Another vector we watched was RABIES.

And we’d set traps or search out and kill
    suspected rabid specimens.

    With me so far?

After a while the freezer got full. Dogs,
cats, rats and sundry mammalians just had
    to go.

    THIS was a fun time.

We’d take all the dead bodies and throw
them in the back of a pickup and drive to
that side of the island that went DOWN.

    Picture this… a lava cliff 200 feet
above the water and you just back up to
    it and dump.

So many had dumped there that there was
a worn spot in the basalt. A chute if you
    will.

    The dump of Guam.

Now when I was there, a ship had busted
up on the other side of the island filled
with rice. BIG SHIP. And it took truck
after truck for months to get rid of. And
all that rice went to the dump/chute.

Now, I can tell you this ... from 200’
there were sharks. BIG sharks. I can attest
to them being at least 35’ and there were
    a bunch.

Just hanging around and waiting for the
    garbage.

Sooo, we used to feed them dead dogs, cats,
    rats and watch them ...feed.

Remember, these sharks are well-fed on all
that rice I mentioned. Fat fuckers.

I used to watch them fight each other as
we dropped the dead bodies down. Dumb fucks.

    Sorry Barb.

  6. Hmm, sounds like the shark got a taste for people.  What they need is to dangle some in the water as bait and shoot them when they get close.

I’ll happily volunteer the DNC for the task, and tell the snipers not to worry about sighting in their scopes till they get there.  We have plenty of bait.

  7. MT, I like the way you think!

  8. Yes Dottie, I still LOVE sharks. More swimmers in the water=more attacks. I AM sorry for those kids and their families.

I’ve only heard of one other situation with a sufer and two whites-but this kid WALKED out of the water.
The kid-also an aussie I think-was kncked off his board by a white-and someone got it on film.  While he walked away with a superficial leg wound, if you watch the film you can see what he didn’t-that there were clearly TWO whites in the water. Lucky kid.

And Steel-unless those shark were whale sharks or basking sharks-both plankton eaters-then they WEREN’T ‘35.
The BIGGEST whites-extremely rare-are maybe ‘25, and they (the “dangerous” sharks) just get smaller from there.
‘35 indeed! *shakes head and smiles knowingly*

  9. Hmmm… I wonder if Chevy Chase has ever considered surfing?

  11. Let’s see if I got that right ...

Teens dragging another teen on a small surfboard ... behind a boat…

I haven’t been fishing in a long time, but it seems to me that is called trawling.

I heard that the biggest Great White cought was a 7.3 meter female that got tangled in a fisherman’s net in NZ this past year.

Also, the video ALT mentioned is at surfermag

  12. Tac, trawling is dragging gear on the bottom.
Trolling is what you refer to.

Barb, Remember, I was on Guam. They say that
the biggest moray is 4’. I saw one in a jar
that was 9’. Also saw a manta that overlapped
the boat I was on by several feet
on all sides. The boat was 25’ long. It’s
hard to size up a creature from 200’ up, but
my dear, whites get to 35’. They just don’t
get caught. Giant squid? I have caught a
squid that was easily 30’. Don’t believe
everything in the encyclopedia. The Trench
is a whole different place. Big things
be there. Remember young lady, I was at
sea for a long time. There are creatures
therein that have not been seen but for
the men who ply those waters.

  13. Still waiting to hear some of your stories, Steel.  You must have some doozies.  Fill us in!  Contact us via email with some and hell, we might just run them!!!

  14. Thanks for your service Steel smile
So I take it that you believe “meggies” are still with us.
Not me. They had the “Port Fairy” Jaws for a while-supposed to be from a ‘36 white. In the 1950’s or 1960’s, some bright soul got around to mesuring the bite radius of the Jaws. It turned out the radius matched EXACTLY the radius of a ‘16 white which while big, dones not a “monster” make.
In all the reading I’ve done(I’ve been a shark enthusiast since pre-school)I’ve seen no evidence that supports the existence of meggies. Giant Squid are occasionally caught and photographed. If those giant whites were out there, you’d think someone would have gotten one on camera-one that could actually be measured."for the scientific record.”

Also, since whites eat pinepeds, those monsters would need to come into area’s where they could possibly come into contact with humans. If someone had an up close encounter the a monster white it would surely make headlines.
It’s kind of hard to hide the existance of a ‘30+ carnivorous shark.
    I respectfully remain unconvinced smile

  15. They’ve only been photographed from the inside.
