  1. Try downloading a copy of Oracle’s Openoffice. Its free and works a lot better with pdfs.

  5. Ditto on the OpenOffice. I use it for pdf crunching. It has a small learning curve from Office and is a bit more efficient.

  6. Thanks re. Open Office. I’ve heard of it of course. Are you guys saying I can uninstall WORD and not lose everything stored in that program, and transfer everything now on my drive over to Open Office?

  7. I have no problems with .pdf files using the standard Acrobat readers. The only problem that I have is with some of the documents, which are not actually text, but photos of text. You can’t highlight the words when it’s just a picture of them.

I see a lot of that photographed document stuff with the genealogy research. It’s a pain.

But when I do have text is highlights easily, and then pastes into whatever other writing tools I want. It’s not a problem for me.

Some .pdf files are just crazy huge and take forever to download. Then they suck your computer resources dry because you’ve got a 348 page document loaded down with pictures and the PC tries to load the whole damn thing at once. So they can be slow to view. Rather!
