  1. Drew - off-topic, but do you happen to know the typical muzzle velocity of a .223 round fired out of one of these new 7.5” barrel-length “AR-type” pistols? I can’t find any specs.

Methinks the terminal performance of the AP rounds O’Bongo wants to “confiscate” - er, I mean ban - would be greatly compromised.

I really don’t see them getting much above 1600-1700 ft/s, given the short barrel length and resultant inefficient / incomplete powder burn.

Seems to me they would have pretty poor AP performance (if any), even with the “nasty” core.

Thoughts? Can you model this scenario on your external ballistics software?

    I don’t mean to trouble you…

  3. Steamie - There are any number of .223 and .308 barrel length studies online. Few of them go down to pistol length barrels though. OTOH, the velocity loss is fairly linear, so you can extrapolate ...

  4. Actually, the answer I think you are looking for is 600 lb/ft. This is about the same power as a .357Mag in the same length barrel, using the ultra light Corbon 110gr HP. And the “lite recoil” 158s at 1300fps, and the 125JHPs at a full 1475fps. Remember, the formula is (velocity X velocity X bullet weight in grains) / 450240

See BBTI for charts and graphs.

The pukey little .224 bullet, 50-70 grains, drops to barely 2000fps in a 7” barrel, making it nearly the same power as a .22 Magnum rimfire in a rifle. Even if you load your own using the latest magical AR Comp powder, you’re still looking at an ungodly ear shattering blast and a huge fireball that might flash back and burn you. PLUS now you have to figure out a whole new bleed hole and actuator spring arrangement, since the gas tap is now nearly in the chamber instead of halfway or more down the barrel. IOW, standard holes and springs are going to give you a gun that breaks real fast from slamming the bolt too hard.

An AR pistol is a fumb duck idea IMO. Unless you build it to use pistol cartridges. And the .223 isn’t one of those.

Given a code red situation, I’d rather have the .357 with the 125JHPs.

PS - that “armor piercing” stuff is pure BS. Hardly a modern rifle bullet around that won’t pierce body armor if you shoot it hard enough.

  5. Thx, Drew. You confirmed my own suspicions about 7” barreled weapons for .223. NO real threat to armored cops.

Of course, you could BLIND the cop (and yourself) by shooting an AR pistol at night. Bet the flash is better than a W296 (full load) .44 mag cartridge out of a 6” S&W 29 ! They say you can see that from space! (/sarc)

Yeah, the AR pistol is a showpiece. A useless toy for wannabe’s who want to play Judge Dredd.

  6. WW296 ... the all or nothing powder you secretly fear a little (load a full case or don’t use it. Light loads are said to be explosive) ... plus it’s the powder with the aroma you love. Shoot it one day, smell the stuff with every breath for the next several days.  Taste it too!  And it’s the BEST at foomgun loads. Pull the trigger ... FOOOM! Massive fireball, seen from space absolutley, and the concussion pops all the air out of your lungs. Awesome. Shit eating grin from ear to ear, glued in place for hours.

Much better than H110 or VV110. Forget 231 or dirty old Unique. But I do wanna try ‘Lil Gun, and heavy loads of that other Cowboy Action one. Someday.

  7. You said it, bro! I used to keep a sticky-note on my ‘296 can saying, “Be afraid. Be very afraid”.

    Full cases are a must.

My desert Eagle .44 Mag (Damn, I miss that pistol! I have a .50AE now, but its not the same) used to blast out a full four-foot blowtorch with every round. I LOVED that gun. And the taste and smell of ‘296. It even smells good in the can!

Don’t get me started on Unique. Feelthy, feeelty powder! Generally I’m not fond of any of the “Dot” powders, even though Unique is not really “dotted” - IIRC.

H110, ...ok...I guess. 231 - meh. Neither has much “presence”.
