Eileen Nearne. Ever heard of her? Me neither. And that’s sad cos she was a brave Battling Brit. RIP

  1. It is understood she has no surviving family and no-one was found to pay for her funeral.

I’ve made arrangements for just such circumstances. I don’t want a funeral. I want to be cremated. I told my wife to keep me on the mantle so I can watch… (our living room has seen some action!)

Kudos to the public outcry, however. No WWII hero/heroine should leave uncelebrated.

But… the undertakers shouldn’t have to foot the bill. I understand they’ve voluntarily waived the fees. Good for them. But I think they only did that due to the ‘public outcry’.

If the ‘public’ is so upset, they should pay the undertakers.

Hundreds of well-wishers have today volunteered to donate money so that Miss Nearne could be given a send-off befitting her wartime service.

    Exactly. Community at its best!

  2. Every time I think the brits are over the bend as a society you throw these heart felt stories in my face.
    Thank You.

  3. Rich ... yeah but these are members of another generation.

Wanna read some awesome stories? Check this out.

All obits today are on some RAF guys, as Britain remembers the anniversary of the Blitz 70 yrs ago.  Been going on all week.  And there’s so damn few left. Take a gander at these three.  Damn I would love to have known at least one of these guys. I can’t post them all and I’m not certain but even posting one a day might be overkill.  So I post only a few and not even every week.  Maybe I should change that.  These people were special, and yet they weren’t famous or even known outside their communities.  But they all had stories.
They were giants.  I have much respect and admiration for them.
Shame we don’t do that on the same level back in states and give the room our guys deserve.
I don’t know if you’re familiar with Brit newspapers.  They are very large, called broadsheets I think.  Ours are not that big and in fact, wife and I discovered that the papers back home have shrunk in size.  Even the Wall Street Journal. Yikes ...

Check out that link.  Reading about some guy diving right through flak in a dive cause there wasn’t any other way to get out, was eye opening.
