  1. This is what I would play:

    1. Re1 Rd8 --- Get control of the e-file the black rook cannot play RxR because QxR
    2. Qb5 g6 --- The Queen is stuck in place so make an out square for the king
    3. Qxd7 Rxb8 --- Best Black can do
    4. Re8+ Rxe8 --- White is ahead trade material
    5. Qxe8+ And white will win.

That was my analysis and then I turned it over to Rykba.  Lets just say that black has other options.

And about game #237.  I agree with Drew, once again the book got the moves wrong! This is at least the fourth time.  And it got it wrong on move 2.  Instead of playing 2. ... Qd7 black plays 2. ... Qd5 then white is up material but it is much much harder for white to make progress and far from a won game.  And I saw the d5 move in my own analysis which is why I said I would make the knight move and react.  We have seen a lot of mistakes from the Combination Challenge book.

  2. Was it something I said? --- Ok. I promise not to say Rykba again until a problem has been up for a couple of days.  But this is what I learned after working out the solution above.

Now I had spent quite a bit of time on that line, and in a game I might have been under pressure to move rapidly from that point on.  No problem if the game went as I expected.

But --- Instead of playing 1. Re1 Rd8 Rykba responded in seconds with a big surprise.

    1. Re1 Re2xg2+

I had never considered Re2xg2+ as a response and thought the computer was just throwing away material to delay the inevitable. I played rapidly:

    2. KxR and the sky fell in.

Black plays: 2. ... Qg4+ and the game is a draw, I cannot escape perpetual check and a three move repetition that forces the draw. There is an out for white that keeps the win alive and given time I would likely find it.  But in a game if I was under time pressure probably not.

The move I chose for my first move, 1. Re1 was the best. And if black reacted as I thought the line is sound.  Otherwise I have some more work to do to deal with:

    1. ... Re2xg2+.

Anyway no more Rykba until some comments go up, though I will if I see a post soon enough put up my own unaided work.

  3. Was what something you said? Why? Just because I haven’t answered… yet? No, you didn’t say anything. And I don’t mind you using Rybka, though I would appreciate it if your first attempt is sans Rybka. As it would be in a tournament.

Just remember one thing: most of these games were played long before there were strong computer programs. Even when Combination Challenge was published in 1990, the strongest program I was aware of was Sargon II which a friend of mine ran on his Trash 80.

Again Wes, no, you didn’t say anything. Don’t forget, I’m unemployed and doing a serious job search. I’m continuing it even though I’ve passed two of three job interviews with a financial services company, and am now enrolled in an on-line course to pass the State’s licensing test. This is a big, national, financial services company. Not one of those ‘pay-roll advance’ places that prey on poor and stupid people.

Am I scared? Yes. I believe I can do well. But here I go again! If I ever showed you my résumé, you’d note that every time I change jobs, I change career fields. At no time have I changed jobs within the same field.

I’ll post how the game actually went. Rybka is right, except Black played Rxg2+ a move later.
