  1. I’d say patience! The bastard was able to get up and walk...not here.

  2. You have to bear in mind it needs to be extreme provocation with the UK police otherwise they would have charged the BBC bod with assault.

  3. BBC man was not arrested because of special privileged position. You are correct that had it been anybody else it would have been the other way around.

Remind me not to go to the former Great Britain.

  4. There is street violence in the US, yes. To the extent that it appears to happen in the UK, where random passerby are assaulted for no particular reason… not so much I don’t think. Many areas of large cities here in the US have zones where innocents can get caught in gun crossfire and zones where police don’t enforce very much so gangs take over the running of the neighborhoods. But that isn’t very common outside of large urban areas. Partly, yes, it probably has to do with weapon ownership here. Partly is is probably due to us being a violent lot, by and large, and retaliation being fairly sure outside of progressive leftist enclaves. Also, so far anyway, our courts don’t typically hold someone to blame for self defense whereas it seems to happen more often in the UK that the victim becomes the person on the spot in court. The US isn’t a haven of peace, love and understanding, that’s for sure, and there are large areas of certain cities I wouldn’t set foot in (see Detroit) for any amount of money. But by and large, this kind of stuff where people are beaten to death on a street corner for no reason other than giggles seems to be pretty rare.

And bear in mind also, that assuming the UK media works the same way the US media does, you see all of the bad stories in bold print because if it bleeds, it leads. So we often tend to get a worse impression of the situation than is really accurate. Not saying things aren’t bad, I hear enough from residents to know they are pretty nasty.

  5. Nicole, Thanks for that.

This past week, speaking of bleeds-leads, the papers were reporting something like a million attacks made by total strangers. I can’t remember now if that figure was for the past year or past ten years.  I saw the headline but didn’t read the article that went with it.  Bad on me. I should have.

Your term “for no reason other then giggles” is highly accurate. To make matters worse, apparently violent young women are also on the increase.
